Update

Please visit the Institute Page
of our website for all of the latest updated information.

Expressive Arts Florida Institute is a two-level training program for those interested in pursuing the Expressive Arts as a professional path, whether integrating it into an existing career, or beginning a career in the expressive arts field.

An INTERMODAL EXPRESSIVE ARTS TRAINING PROGRAM, Expressive Arts Florida Institute is grounded in a firm belief that an integrated arts approach is a powerful agent of change. Students will participate in visual art-making of various kinds, writing, poetry, music, movement, drama, and guided visualization. An emphasis will be on the power of following the natural creative flow from one arts modality to another.

The learning format is THREE WEEKEND INTENSIVE COURSES  per calendar year, generally in January, April, and October in Sarasota, FL. Each weekend is 25 hours of class time. In addition, there is a one-day orientation program for new students. There are also elective credits, which students can often earn in their own community, online communication with an adviser, and a Practicum/Internship at the end of the second year.  We offer flexibility for entry of new students; they may start the program with any of the Level 1 weekend intensives. Our goal is to create a FLEXIBLE LEARNING FORMAT for students traveling to Sarasota from other areas.

For those who are interested in getting a head-start on their training, consider the Pre-Institute Expressive Arts Intensive on January 13-16, 2011. Details and registration information here. See all the details here.

I Am a Seed of Self-Awareness
by Jane Keil Yoder

I have been quite fortunate to have participated in many wonderful artistic classes at Expressive Arts FL over the past four years - however, this summer I registered for several sessions of "Expressive Arts for Self-Awareness", facilitated by Victoria. What an eye-and heart-opening experience each of the sessions were for me. Each two and a half-hour session involved sand exploration, writing, creating an art piece, more writing, and then sharing.

The first part of each class involved exploring a "sand tray". The round tray was filled with a mound of multi-colored sand. The sand felt cool, gritty, and wonderful to touch. After a few minutes, we were instructed to begin adding objects from a basket, such as rocks, shells, twigs, and/or feathers - just to name a few. The basket was passed around until each participant felt that their sand- object creation was complete.  It ended up being an amazingly, meaningful experience for me. On June 24, 2010, I wrote the following after my sand tray experience:

I am a sacred, feathery fortress.
We are a comfortable community joined together
               I am strong alone.
               We are stronger together.
I fill my container with possibilities.
We travel our separate, sacred paths together.

The next step in the session's process is to create a piece of art.  Each session involved a different set of directions or format and art materials.  We used watercolors, oil pastels, or acrylics.  Each piece I created emerged from deep within me. My artistic creations always surprised me and filled me with joy and wonder-even when I didn't immediately understand what their meaning was for me.
Upon completion of my art piece and after verbal directions from Victoria, this is what I wrote on June 24th:

I am a creative, free-floating being learning to be who I am meant to be. I am a seed of self-awareness, bursting forth from the cocoon of warm familiarity - emerging into a stream of consciousness that fulfills me.
I sound like water lapping against a shore of newness and possibility-soft, rhythmic waves. I move easily with formless freedom and am growing beyond my wildest dreams.

Then again on September 9, 2010 after a sand tray exploration, I wrote:

I wonder if I am interconnected in a community with others.  I wonder if I am different pieces of myself, yet one piece within my total self.  I wonder if my strength empowers all of me.  I wonder if I am able to see all that I am meant to be.

That night, I worked with acrylics and water on canvas.  I was instructed to begin with one color as a backdrop and then add different colors. Again the result was dramatic and a phenomenal experience for me.  My written expression for my piece was:

I wonder what I would see if I looked deep within my soul. I wonder if the light within me is burning brightly.  I wonder if I am ablaze with the fire of growth and creativity. I wonder if the journey I am on, on the outside, matches all that is living within the deepness of my soul. Light, love, passion, creativity, possibility, movement, growth, fire and delight all live there, and I wonder if I am allowing them to surface and be seen.

I think these words speak volumes as to the incredible experience one can have in participating in any Expressive Arts FL workshops.  I know that I have gained greater insights into who I am as a woman, as well as the expressive artist I am becoming.

Sincerely submitted by,
Jane Keil Yoder

ieataInternational Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA) News...
·         We are grateful to be an active part of our blossoming International professional Expressive Arts organization - IEATA!

·        IEATA is currently focusing on developing Regional Groups for members of the organization to connect with one another near and far.  Elizabeth Bornstein and Sheri Gaynor are the IEATA Regional Committee Co-Chairs. Their focus has been creating a strong network to keep IEATA members connected and encourage sharing of activities and ideas with other members in their regions.  In September 2010, the IEATA Members Network site hosted by Ning.com was introduced to IEATA Members.  This Network is a great forum for IEATA members as well as the Regional Groups to connect with one another. Regional Groups have been developing beautifully and each group's format is organic, which allows for creativity and region-specific needs.  Florida is a part of the South Atlantic Regional Group which also includes:Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.  Victoria Domenichello-Anderson, Ella Hill and Meredith Casper are the Regional Coordinators for this Region. If you are an IEATA member, stay tuned for your invitation to sign on and Regional Group information. If you are not a member and would like to join, please visit  www.ieata.org/membership.html. If you have any questions, please contact Elizabeth and Sheri at regional@ieata.org
