"When we trust our creative energy, we encounter a supreme kind of
enjoyment-an amazement at the natural unfolding of life beyond our
ordinary way of looking at things. When we talk about creating art-or
more importantly, the art of living a sane life-it means trusting our
basic nature and its natural creativity. Natural creativity is something
very large, the essence of everything." Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche
|
"Everyone sees the unseen in proportion to the clarity of his heart, and
that depends upon how much he has polished it. Whoever has polished it
more sees more - more unseen forms become manifest to him." Rumi

HELLO and WELCOME to our SEPTEMBER 2010 Edition of Expressive Arts Florida News!
As summer comes to a close, we find ourselves gearing up for a busy season in the upcoming months. For September, we will open the gallery "by appointment only". Our classes and workshops - Animal Wisdom, Expressive Arts for Self-Awareness, and Expressive Arts Community Networking resume, and we will be open for the Towles Court Artwalk on Sept. 17. Kathleen will be returning from B.C. at the end of the month, and will begin a new Art as a Healing Practice series in October. Details for all of these are below. Our two online groups, Expressive Arts Facilitator's Support and Mentoring and Mandala as Personal Practice, are continuing, and both currently have openings. Our most exciting news for this month is information about the launching of our new training institute, with our first weekend intensive class scheduled for April 2011, and an advance "for credit" course in January. There is more information below, and we will have additional details on our website by Sept. 15.
We are approaching 3 years in business, and we would like to thank you for your interest in, and support of, the expressive arts. We are thrilled to be a part of such an incredible community!

ANIMAL WISDOM update Facilitated by Victoria and ElizabethWe have been guiding the participants in a multi-modal expressive arts
process, using the book "Animal Speak" by Ted Andrews. We have
explored a combination of sandplay, visual art-making, mixed media
assemblage, creative writing, movement, and sound, all the while identifying and
experiencing creatures big and small that cross our path in everyday
life. We both agree that the wisdom of these creatures has much to tell us
as long as we "listen and pay attention". If our energy is closed off we will
not see them even if they are right in front of us. The expressive arts process
enables us to open up to our inner and outer landscape allowing new
awareness and growth to occur. New dates for this popular classRegistration now being accepted for Session 1: Tuesday Sept. 21 Session 2: Tuesday Sept. 286:30-9 pmAdditional dates coming soon. Fee: $35 per class
MENTORING AND SUPPORT GROUP FOR EXPRESSIVE ARTS FACILITATORS Facilitated by Kathleen, this is a small group (max 10) for those who are in the beginning stages of an expressive arts practice, or who are launching a new area of expressive arts work. Participants receive professional and peer guidance and support. Appropriate for both practitioners and expressive arts therapists. Easy-to-use private, confidential blog format. $50 per month; 1 month commitment required.
MANDALA AS PERSONAL PRACTICE An online forum for exploring the mandala, sharing images,
writings, and experiences. Kathleen facilitates by providing information,
resources, teachings and images, and offers feedback and suggestions to
participants. Discussion and sharing is encouraged between participants.
This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in exploring the Mandala as a
personal art practice, learning more, sharing their art and insights, and
staying connected with others, without geographical barriers. Call or email for
info. Easy-to-use, confidential blog format. $25 per month (1 month commitment required;

EXPRESSIVE ARTS FLORIDA INSTITUTE Update
We are excited to provide you with the following information about our new Expressive Arts Florida Institute!!
Expressive Arts Florida Institute is a two-level training program for those interested in pursuing the Expressive Arts as a professional path, whether integrating it into an existing career, or beginning a career in the expressive arts field. LEVEL 1:An experiential and didactic learning program that will provide a solid foundation of expressive arts practice. Students will become familiar with the scope of the field, and will have personally immersed themselves in this work, resulting in the development of a personal practice in the expressive arts. Depending on each student's previous educational and professional background, they may be ready to begin implementing this work with others, as a facilitator. LEVEL 2:Upon completion of this experiential and didactic learning program, students will be ready to facilitate the expressive arts with others and create their own professional practice. An INTERMODAL EXPRESSIVE ARTS TRAINING PROGRAM, Expressive Arts Florida Institute is grounded in a firm belief that an integrated arts approach is a powerful agent of change. Students will participate in visual art-making of various kinds, writing, poetry, music, movement, drama, and guided visualization. An emphasis will be on the power of following the natural creative flow from one arts modality to another. The learning
format
is THREE WEEKEND INTENSIVE COURSES per calendar year, generally in January, April, and
October in Sarasota, FL. Each weekend is 25 hours of class time. In addition, there is a
one-day orientation program for new students. There are also elective
credits, which students can often earn in their own community, online
communication with an adviser, and a Practicum/Internship at the end of the
second year. We offer flexibility for entry of new students; they may start the program with any of the Level 1 weekend intensives. Our goal is to create a flexible learning
format for students traveling to Sarasota from other areas. OVERVIEW AND SCOPE OF CURRICULUM
During the Level 1 Training, students can expect a personal immersion into intermodal expressive arts, a holistic, whole-person approach, and an overview of the breadth and depth of the field. The material covered during the Level 2 training will focus increasingly on developing facilitation skills, understanding various theoretical approaches and real-world applications, defining the scope and focus of one's own work, and the business, ethics, and profession of Expressive Arts. Between weekend intensive courses, students will communicate with their adviser and complete written assignments.
We are planning to officially launch the institute with our APRIL 2011 WEEKEND INTENSIVE COURSE. We are currently updating our website with information related to the Institute, and we plan to have more detailed information, including tuition cost, detailed curriculum, application procedure and admission policy available by September 15.
Additional questions and requests for information should be addressed to institute@expressiveartsflorida.com
For those wanting to get a "head start" on their Institute training, and other interested participants, we are offering : INTERMODAL EXPRESSIVE ARTS INTENSIVE January 13-16, 2011. This will be a 25 hour immersion into expressive arts, providing students a guided opportunity to follow the thread of their own creative process through the modalities of visual art, movement, sound, writing, music, dramatic enactment, and guided visualization.
Thursday 5:00-9:00 pm, Friday 9-5:30; Saturday 9-5:30, Sunday 9 am - 1 pm. Details, registration procedure and tuition will be posted on the website by Sept. 15.Questions and requests for additional information should be addressed to institute@expressiveartsflorida.com Students who apply for and are admitted to the Institute Training will earn credit for completion of this course.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS PROCESS OF THE MONTH
"When you are on a hike, or sitting in your backyard, or the beach, or
even on your balcony, gather objects that call your attention and build
an arrangement. You might place 5 white pebbles in a line on a large
dark stone. You might put a red leaf in a bed of yellow leaves. You
might put a single white seashell on a tiny piece of driftwood. You
might take a fallen branch as a base and pile stones on top of it,
sprinkle leaves like confetti over it, and crown it with feathers. Work
without thinking or planning. Allow the part of your mind that enjoys
shape and color to come forward and take over. Don't try to make sense
of what you make, or judge your progress. Simply allow your hands to
place things in relationship to one another. When you are finished, look
carefully at what you have created, then walk away. Continue on with
what you were doing. Don't look back. Let your art go."
