HELLO and WELCOME
to our JUNE 2010 Edition of Expressive Arts Florida News!

Welcome to the onset of summer, and, in Florida, the transition from "season" to quieter, slower times, where we can move in rhythm to the increased heat and longer days. Here at Expressive Arts Florida, we have reduced our gallery schedule to match the decrease in Towles Court foot traffic. We have created some new programs to meet your needs for continued creative expression. Our online programs are continuing, as well as monthly Expressive Arts Community Networking, and, of course the monthly Artwalks. In the gallery, we are showing our own work and offering increased opportunities for collaborative art-making. In addition, we are busy planning - moving along in the development of our training institute, and getting ready for next season's exhibits and workshop schedule.

Some highlights from the last few weeks:

*May 19 Art Walk: We had a lot of fun collaborating with gallery visitors in creating some new artwork. Please see the photos in the left hand column, to see the evolution of 2 community pieces! And stop by during gallery hours, our at the next art walk (June 18) and add your mark to these art pieces.

*May 26 Expressive Arts Community Networking:
Judy Lyon, our guest facilitator, led us in "scribble drawing", a fun, simple,  and illuminating process for expanding creativity and gaining personal insight. Judy is an Art Teacher at Riverview High School,  a graduate of the Art and Healing Certificate Program at Ringling College of Art and Design and she facilitates Art and Healing classes at Art Center Sarasota.. Thank you, Judy, for a great evening!

*Victoria's new workshop series: Expressive Arts for Self-Awareness and Renewal, got off to a great start last week. There are still opportunities to join in and discounts for attending multiple sessions. This is a great opportunity to stay connected with your creativity over the summer months.

*Kathleen has made her seasonal transition to British Columbia where she will stay until the end of September. From B.C. she is continuing her Online Groups - Support and Mentoring, and Mandalas,  and, thanks to the miracle of skype, staying connected with our planning process for next year. Kathleen will also be creating workshops and participating in gallery events while in B.C.

Brand new and exciting summer studios and workshops are coming right up, . Keep your creative energy alive by participating!

We hope that you will choose to join us during the summer months!

With Victoria and Elizabeth
By paying attention to the natural world around us, and taking notice of those creatures big and small who visit us in our day-to-day life, we can use the language, spirit and inspiration of animals to communicate and connect with our inner and outer worlds. As we attune to Mother Nature and the symbols and powers of our animal guides, we are able to tap into the essence of inner knowing, gaining self-awareness and a deeper understanding or our authentic path and purpose.
Class includes art-making, journaling, and working with nature.
Required book: "Animal Speak" by Ted Andrews.
For Victoria's story behind the creation of this class, please scroll down or  click here

PARTNERSHIPS & COMMUNITY NEWS

The I Am Home project began a year ago in January as a collaboration between Suncoast Partnership to End Homelessness and Resurrection House. Expressive Arts Florida facilitated a two-hour studio each week in the day center on Kumquat for people who are homeless.  Anyone who was interested could come and make art. Artists emerged and have developed over the 17 months that the program has been meeting.  The sessions allow people to spend some time expressing themselves and creating something new through the arts.  Many people have been painting since we began in January 2009 and have exciting new work to show.  Currently, the artists are showing "Doors of Perception" at the Art Center Sarasota, www.artsarasota.org which were created in collaboration with other artists and volunteers working with the program.  The doors will be auctioned off at a meet and greet event on June 3 5-7.  On June 17 at 5:00, Tommy Bahama on St. Armand's Circle will host a quarterly fundraiser/sale of art work to benefit the artists without homes.

animalwisdomstory New workshop "Animal Wisdom" and how it came to be.
I have always found myself drawn to animals and nature. Although, on many occasions throughout my life, it seemed more like they were drawn to me. They would come in and out of my life at both mysterious and opportune times. For the past few years both Elizabeth and I have enjoyed sharing and exploring these creatures that come into our lives on a regular basis and the times and circumstances which they show up. In an effort to learn more about the language of these creatures I purchased the book "Animal Speak" by Ted Andrews, and then gave one to Elizabeth as a gift. The book has been a wonderful guide to the inner knowledge of animal wisdom. So often I would be visited by a butterfly fluttering about my head or a rabbit would cross my path. As I looked deeper into these creatures and their symbols I found interesting messages coming my way concerning something I had been dealing with or pondering. Sometimes these messages would be subtle and non directive, guiding me to further exploration, and other times it would hit me over the head with a boom. Both Elizabeth and I have found this a useful tool and a wonderful way to share our life's questions and curiosities. It has brought us a heightened awareness of the power of animals and nature.
Elizabeth and I have developed a class using the above book as a reference guide. We will use visual art, journaling, sound, movement, and nature, along with one's own awareness of the world around you and those creatures that cross your path.

Hope to see you there!
 Victoria and Elizabeth.

With gratitude for a wonderful Expressive Arts Community!
