Thank You For Supporting Your Community!

The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties is grateful to work with such generous and active members in the community.

Donor-advisor knowledge and passion for local philanthropic issues accounted for approximately 250 grants and $934,000 to not-for-profits ranging from education to veterans to human services in 2011. Donor-advised grantmaking made up 52% of our grants and 26% of our total grantmaking dollars.

Several of our donor-advisors have taken advantage of the opportunities to co-fund projects such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School community garden, and programs like America Reads through Hamilton College and Utica City Elementary Schools.

Thank you for your generous investments in the community we hold so dear.

Invitation from Marie Piayai: Sculpture Space Works in Progress Reception

I have enjoyed these past several months as the new program officer speaking with many donor-advisors who are so involved in the community. I still haven't met everyone and hope that this artists reception will be a good opportunity for us to get together.

The February 21st reception will take place at Sculpture Space on 12 Gates Street in Utica from 5-7 p.m.

Please RSVP to Program Officer Marie Piayai, 735-8212 or mpiayai@foundationhoc.org

Herkimer County's Aging Population

Did you know if you or someone you loved went to the Emergency Department with chest pains and the hospital kept you for two nights for observation that would be considered outpatient and Part A of Medicare would not cover the costs?

These are the kinds of situations challenging our 60 and older population, making up 21% of Herkimer County. Compare this with the 15% senior population for the U.S. and the 17% for New York State. The aging population in Herkimer County is a main priority.

Fortunately, the Herkimer County Office for the Aging funds the HIICAP (Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program). Throughout 2011 staff advised approximately 1,000 clients for an average of 35 minutes each to help seniors through these situations. The Office of Aging's Four-Year Plan emphasizes basic needs and health related concerns.

Please consider these grant opportunities:

  • For the first time in many years, there is a waitlist for Herkimer County's Meals on Wheels program. In 2009, they served 425 clients, 2010: 460, 2011: 493. Your grants could help eliminate this waiting list.
  • Catholic Charities of Herkimer County assists seniors in traveling to appointments outside of the county such as Cooperstown, Rochester and Syracuse. Funds would contribute towards gas mileage and vehicle use.
  • Oneida and Herkimer counties' RSVP's Bill Payer program helps at-risk seniors manage their monthly finances. Grants would help volunteers who travel to seniors homes with gas mileage and vehicle use.
Please contact Marie Piayai at 315-735-8212 or mpiayai@foundationhoc.org to discuss these opportunitities further.

Literacy Update - The Community Foundation's Community Leadership and Strategic Initiatives Committee recently approved approximately $108,000 to fund a Regional Literacy Plan through Literacy Powerline as well as to hire an executive director to work full-time on literacy initiatives in the two counties. A portion of this project was contributed by the donor-advised M&T Bank/Partners Trust Bank Charitable Fund.
