One-Year Anniversary: Community Indicators Update

Learn more about the local issues you care about!

The community indicators project website undertaken by The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Mohawk Valley EDGE and United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area has been refreshed with another annual dataset.

Data is collected from national, state, county and local agencies managed by the Center for Governmental Research in Rochester, NY. The site provides a statistical snapshot of Herkimer and Oneida counties and measures indicators in arts, culture and leisure, financial self-sufficiency, economy, education, health, housing, public safety, technology and transportation.

Among the findings with this update are:

  • Oneida County tourism revenue brings in more dollars per capita than the New York State average (excluding New York City), and Herkimer County's tourism revenue is about twice that of its comparison counties, Fulton and Montgomery.
  • The ratio of technology and computer teachers in public schools is higher than the state average in both counties. This instruction helps to better prepare students for higher education and careers that are increasingly more high tech.
  • In both counties, a higher percentage of children tested for lead exposure had elevated levels than the state average.

The website is a tool to highlight the flourishing sectors and also the areas where donor-advisors can make the most impactful grants. We hope you take advantage of this tool to keep inspiring you to fund opportunities of growth in the community with your grants. Use the data to determine where you would like your efforts to go with your year-end grantmaking. If you would like to venture deeper into your interests, we would be happy to set up a visit at fitting organizations that can be great partners.

Invitation from Marie Piayai to Site Visit to Nature Sanctuary

Spring Farm sanctuary
The nature sanctuary at Spring Farm CARES is home to several species of flora and fauna.
I am thrilled to be the new Program Associate here at The Community Foundation and would like to invite you to meet with me while learning about some
an environmentally-friendly initiative in the area.

Let's tour Spring Farm Cares Nature Sanctuary together on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. The approximately 260 acres of land the Nature Sanctuary encompasses has been in the hands of Spring Farm Cares President Bonnie Jones Reynolds' family since 1860, operating as agricultural fields and farm land. During the 90's they began to preserve it as a sanctuary, planting over 75 native species of trees and 325 flowering plants letting it become a natural forest where threatened or endangered habitats could flourish. To learn more visit their website.

We will meet in Spring Farm Cares main parking lot. Please dress in appropriate outdoor activity clothing, such as long pants, outdoor boots/shoes. Bring your camera and binoculars if you would like to capture some of the beautiful bird and plant species they protect. The nature trail tour, including a view of the seven Beaver Family dam, will last approximately 45 minutes. The trails are very natural but no steep hills are expected.

Please RSVP to Program Associate Marie Piayai, 735-8212 or mpiayai@foundationhoc.org
