Site Visits: A Unique Way to Experience the Not-for-Profit World
Site visit to the Underground Cafe.
Site visit to Underground Cafe
As the months are warming up and we pass the summer solstice, more and more we yearn to be outside and reaping the benefits of our hard work- and those of the community as well.  In the spirit of celebrating hard work and dedication, we have planned site visits exclusively for donor-advisors to share in our local not-for-profits' efforts.

Site visits are short trips, accompanied by Foundation staff, that usually consist of a tour and information session at a local not-for-profit. Some visits may be held inside, while others may be more appropriate outside. When we plan site visits we take into account your survey answers and past knowledge of our donor-advisors. They are meant to be an educational opportunity that will hopefully inform your grantmaking, but at the very least it will get you out and enjoying the local ambiance.

Our most recent site visit was to the Underground Café, a program of Utica Safe Schools, on May 25. A small group of donor-advisors saw first-hand the real difficulties, successes and opportunities that the local after-school program faces daily. Lillian "Duff" Matt was one donor-advisor in attendance. "I was so impressed with the mission of the  Underground Café.  Those in charge did not think of it just as another job but something really capable of helping others on the road of growing up. I love honesty and it was there," Matt stated.

Upcoming, we have two site visits planned for donor-advisors. The first will be an environmentally-focused visit during the summer. The second visit will be a health and older adults-focused visit in the fall. Keep an eye on your email for invites or let Lara Sepanski (lsepanski@foundationhoc.org or 735-8212) know if you prefer a mailed invitation to such events.

Please consider joining us on site visits to get to know your community better and help it reach its maximum potential.

Give Back to Utica Fund Scholarship Essay Contest: Donor-advisor Steve Oram, a Bethesda, Maryland-area lawyer who grew up in Utica initiated this scholarship. The inaugural prize was awarded on June 3, 2010 to Chelsea Roberts, a graduating senior of Proctor High School. Chelsea's essay about growing up in Utica and giving back to Utica in her future, won her the $1,000 scholarship.  Oram opened the Give Back to Utica Fund to reflect his belief in giving back to his hometown, which remains close to his heart.
