Valley Health Services: Foundation Grant "Makes Their Day"

Registrant Peter and Cheryl LaQuayValley Health Services (VHS) recently partnered with Little Falls Hospital to help adults from the Little Falls, Dolgeville and St. Johnsville areas with their health care needs. Until now, these applicants - most of them senior citizens - would have had to travel a significant distance to Herkimer or Amsterdam for such a program. To meet this growing need for an adult day health care program in eastern Herkimer County, VHS collaborated with Little Falls Hospital by renting and renovating space in the hospital to open a new adult day health care program.

With a Community Foundation grant of $100,000 in August 2009, VHS took 3,000 square feet that had been used as administrative offices at Little Falls Hospital and rebuilt it specifically for adult day health care. This collaborative program can accommodate 18 registrants per day, and is open weekdays from 8:30-2:30. Program Director Cheryl LaQuay describes it as "A family-oriented environment that takes care of every aspect of their lives, so they can remain living in their communities as long as possible." The staff provides health care services such as blood pressure monitoring, medication administration and blood draws. This approach has proven to be very useful in catching medical problems early so that the affected individual can be treated and avoid a costly hospital stay.

VHS can also help registrants in this program make (and keep) medical appointments, access assistance from social service organizations in the community and maintain a social life through outings, cooking classes and a bowling league. VHS also provides transportation to and from the program. LaQuay points out that half of the registrants were isolated in their homes before joining, and that participating in the program has made a great impact on their physical and emotional health.

For the people in Valley Health Service's adult day health care program at Little Falls Hospital, the grant from The Community Foundation has made all the difference. We were able to make this grant because people like you support our work and believe in us, and we thank you.
