Quote of the Month

I recently read this quote that Jeff Badgley of Miller Industries wrote in a recent publication and it resonated with me.

"Love what you do, commit to those you do it for, and let your actions of commitment speak louder than words."

This truck hit the elevated roadway in Brooklyn, NY.  We sent our expert roadservice crew out to secure the rear door frame so that we could prep it for a safe tow home.

Driving Safety Tips

 For Rail SafetyCrossing Signal

- Trains & trucks don't mix. Never race a train to the crossing- even if you tie, you lose.

- The train you see is closer and moving faster than you think. If you see a train approaching, wait for it to go by before you proceed across the tracks.

- Be aware that trains cannot stop quickly. Even if the locomotive engineer sees you, a freight train moving at 55 mph can take a mile or more to stop once the emergency brakes are applied.

- If your vehicle ever stalls on the tracks with a train coming, get out immediately and move quickly away from the tracks in the direction from which the train is coming. If you run in the same direction the train is traveling you may be injured by flying debris. Call 911.

- At a multiple track crossing waiting for a train to pass, watch out for a second train on the other tracks, approaching from either direction.

- When you need to cross train tracks, look both ways, and cross the tracks quickly without stopping. Remember it isn't safe to stop closer than 15 feet from a rail.

- Always expect a train! Freight trains do not follow set schedules.

Dear Greetings!  ,

It is hard to believe that May is already here. Time certainly does fly. We've been busy here at NTS with some pretty interesting jobs. We've highlighted a couple here and will feature some others later this month. The information in the side bar regarding train crossing safety may be worth copying to distribute to your drivers for your next safety meeting.

Stay safe out there!

Sincerely,

Nick Testa

Dump Truck Dilemma

This job definitely fell into the category of "Just when you think you've seen it all"! A dump truck traveling on the Garden State Parkway with the dump body up slammed into an overpass and ripped the body of the truck right off. It was wedged between the roadway and the overpass vertically. The impact ruptured a main waterline on the overpass.

The collision happened on the northbound side of the highway which caused the right and center lanes of the roadway to be shut down while maintenance crews rushed to shut off the water. We were called to the scene to remove the dump body and clear the highway as soon as the authorities gave us the go ahead. We utilized two heavy duty wreckers to free the  dump body from the overpass and lowered it to the ground. We took it into the nearest service area to open up the highway and then lowered it onto our landoll trailer. In the meantime the other wrecker hooked up to the triaxle dump chassis and towed that back to our facility. The roadway was re-opened and traffic was back moving again. Great job guys!

Coffee Break            coffee

It's one of our favorite daily moments- that brief time of day when we pause from our work , sip a cup of coffee, ponder what's next on the to-do-list, and regain some of our mojo. Here's a "Toast To The Roast" with some fun facts about our favorite beverage (non alcoholic that is!)

  • 400 billion cups of coffee are consumed worldwide, making it the most popular beverage.
  • 70% of the world's production of coffee is from the plant of Arabica Coffea.
  • Winnowing or floatation is the process used to physically separate and remove defective beans according to their density, also removing twigs and stones.
  • Did you know that coffee has no calories?  It is naturally a no calorie drink.
  • It takes about 45 coffee beans to make one shot of espresso.
  • Coffee can be good for you. It contains important anti-oxidants, which is the way most Americans get there daily fix. Coffee can be beneficial at about 1-2 cups per day.
  • Coffee is also good for your plants. You can put some cold coffee or coffee grounds into the dirt of you ailing plants to revive them or even add coffee grounds to your garden.
  • The phrase "Cup of Joe" originally started in World War II. American military men were dubbed "G.I. Joes". They were known as big coffee drinkers and hence the name Joe and coffee became synonymous.

Bogey Bonanza

We were called to move four "vintage" trailers. They had been sitting so long that the tires were terribly dry rotted. We sent a wrecker with our set of bogeys and placed it under the nose of the trailer and transported them backwards to their final resting place, a.k.a. the junkyard.
