The heat and humidity have descended on us and with it comes the danger of heat stroke. Learn how to stay cool and healthy as the temperature rises.
1. What is heatstroke? It's a medical emergency caused by body temperature rising dramatically.
2. How do you prevent heat stroke? Taking it easy when it is hot and humid is one key to avoiding heat stroke--don't overdo it and avoid strenuous activity. Another way to prevent it is to stay hydrated.
3. Who is at risk? Anyone can suffer from heat stroke but babies, the elderly, people who work outside and athletes are most at risk.
4. What are the symptoms? People suffering heat stroke often stop sweating, become red in the face, have a rapid pulse and are disoriented among other symptoms. Some patients say they felt like they were having a heart attack as they suffered from heat stroke.
5. How do you help someone with heat stroke? Call 911. Get the person to a shady area and if they can, try and get them to drink some water. Remove clothing and and apply cool water or ice and fan the victim until help arrives.
