March 20-26th is National Poison Prevention Week
This important week was signed into law by President Kennedy in 1961 and the 3rd week of the month of March each year. It is designated to highlight the dangers of poisonings and how to prevent them. As we head into Spring and the warm weather it is good to be mindful of the harmful and potential deadly affects pesticides can have on our children and our pets. Below is a list of helpful hints compiled by the ASPCA and PoisonPrevention.org. - Before applying any pesticides remove children, animals and their toys from the area. - Always store pesticides away from children's reach, in a locked cabinet or garden shed. The most dangerous forms include: snail bait, rat poison, fly bait and mole or gopher bait. -Never transfer pesticides to other containers. Children associate certain containers with food or drink. - Seems so simple but always read the labels and follow the directions on all pesticides. - Unattended garden tools may seem like no big deal but rakes, tillers, hoes and trowels can cause injury. Put unused tools in a safe area, not scattered on the ground. - Be mindful that certain plants like azaleas, rhododendron and sago palm are toxic to cats and dogs and may cause liver or heart problems. ** Put this number in your cell phone.
