This past weekend marked the end of the 2012 Summer Olympics, which inspired the world with astounding athletic achievements. Each time the Games are held, millions tune in to watch these remarkable athletes. So what is it about the spirit of an Olympian that captivates us -- and what can we learn from them?
Winning a gold medal doesn't happen overnight. It takes years of training, perseverance, and focus. There's a lot we can learn from Olympians that can be applied to our professional lives.
Be a visionary. Great athletes know they can succeed. They burn into their minds an image of hitting the perfect shot, crossing the finish line first, and best of all, standing on the podium. Do that for your business goals. Think about what you would like to achieve, and visualize yourself exceeding your objectives. Even during hard times, continue to believe you can succeed.
Get the best coaches and trainers. Olympic athletes have the finest coaches to help them focus physically and mentally. Successful people, whether Olympians, entrepreneurs, or business executives, know that you can't reach your goals alone. Find the best people in your field and learn from them. Go even further and ask one of them to be your mentor or coach.
Capture your audience. What makes us feel connected to certain athletes? We fell in love with gymnast Kerri Strug after she nailed a vault, despite injuring her ankle just minutes before on her first attempt. We cheered on Team USA as they defeated the long-dominant Soviets in 1980 in the hockey game known as "The Miracle on Ice." These athletes had a story and they shared it with the world. Share your business story with your clients. Invite them to connect.
Be present. Olympic athletes know it is all about now. Their world can be dramatically changed by hundredths of a second or fractions of a point. Don't bask in your former glory or obsess about past mistakes. Make the most of your time and energy with your clients today. Focus on the things you do well now and don't agonize over the things you can't control.
Actions speak louder than words. Any athlete can talk a big game and claim they're going to win the gold. But it takes action to get the medal. Do what you promise and let your actions speak volumes about your work and your company.
When it's all on the line, how do you perform? Make the most of every moment and dream BIG! In the Olympics, and in business, it's those who persevere with determination and a vision who succeed!
Sincerely,
Mona Graham
