Did you know that 61 percent of consumers rely on user reviews for product information before making a purchase decision? Or that 53 percent of the people on Twitter recommend products or companies in their tweets? 1
Word of mouth is the strongest influence for today's consumers. And now, with consumer reviews, blogs, forums, tweets, and other online resources, word of mouth marketing is one of the most powerful tools at your fingertips. A strong online presence is absolutely crucial for your business -- you want to be sure you're making the most of these opportunities.
A web presence is more than just an "online brochure" for your business. Customers want to hear what others are saying about your products and services. A study by Nielsen shows that 63 percent of consumers say that reviews and ratings are their preferred source of information when they are deciding which products to buy. Consumer reviews are significantly trusted over a company's own claims -- anyone can say good things about themselves, but reviews give consumers insight into products and services from the people actually using them.
Does your company sell computer parts? Cosmetics? Travel services? Look for your company's products and services on websites such as CNET, Amazon, and TripAdvisor to see what others are saying. It's free insight into what customers think about your business! You can also address bad reviews by responding in a professional and helpful way, always seeking to improve the customer's experience.
Consider also having two-way communication tools, such as a place for product reviews on your existing web site, as well as a Facebook business page, and perhaps a Twitter account -- and make sure these are monitored and responded to daily. Customers are used to having up-to-date information, and may think twice about using your business if your web site and social media pages aren't current.
Think about your current web presence -- if shoppers are looking for your company or product online, will they like what they see? Is your website clean, informative, and easy to navigate? Are customers able to interact with your company, find product reviews on third-party websites, and see what others are saying about you? Can customers even find you online? If you can't easily answer these questions, you need to seriously reconsider your online marketing.
As a recent article from Google says, "if you're not visible online when people are doing (their) homework, believe me, they'll find others who are."
Sincerely,
Mona Graham
