What it Like to Own Your Own Doll Shop?

Issue: # 6August 2010
Greetings!

Our August newsletter takes another hard right turn for content.  So far we have discussed the childhood dolls that we all knew, loved, and grew up with.  We  have polled our readers for what they thought was wrong with todays dolls and the Companies that produce them.  This newsletter features a narative on owning a doll store and the perspective of someone who sells dolls and her perspective on the people that buy them.

Second Childhood???  Absolutely Not!!!
 By Judy Bolyard

Ladies come into my store, sometimes a bit apologetic that they are still
interested in dolls during middle age perhaps..or perhaps in their 60's,
70's or even older.  I always dispel their reticense by letting them know
that dolls are now an ADULT HOBBY; there is no reason to apologize or be
embarrassed by an interest in dolls!

In fact, a few years ago stamp collecting and doll collecting were vying for
top honors as being the MOST COLLECTIBLE ITEM IN THE UNITED STATES.
Truthfully, I am not aware of present status, but I do know adults are the
MOST FREQUENT BUYERS of the weighted baby-dolls such as Lee Middleton dolls.
I have not purchased any newer Lee Middleton dolls since 2003, so mine were
all manufactured  PRIOR TO THE  ERA OF SHIPPING TO CHINA.  Fortunately I
still have a WONDERFUL SUPPLY OF THESE EARLIER MIDDLETON DOLLS...but I find
it more difficult to part with them as time goes by! These 'babies' pull on
a person's heart-strings no matter what our age!!

You see, I too became a collector after opening my store in l988 with only
about 300 dolls.  Now, with over 5000, they are crammed into every nook or
cranny...or crevice sometimes; in fact, it is getting more difficult every
day to walk through my store!  But TRADING brought me quite a few older, or
compo, dolls as people did not always have the $500, perhaps, for a new
artist doll....so I would be glad to make a trade to cover about half of the
cost.  I learned that this TRADING method worked well to bring me some
VINTAGE and COMPO, or ANTIQUE dolls that I would not have had if I were to
hold out for ALL CASH SALES.   So it not only helped the customer, it
actually helped me!!

If you like 'hunting' and enjoy the search for your childhood doll, you
might find it in my shop as I have now about 50% older or vintage dolls.
The other half might be classified as 'new-er' but still unavailable Lee
Middleton pre-China weighted babies, ZOOK KIDS (if you missed the one you
wanted from 88-93), and others such as Judith or Virginia Turner dolls (even
the original PORCELAINS!!), Gadco child-like dolls prior to 93, and
HUNDREDS OF OTHERS, including compos, early sticky-vinyls,  Toodles
babies/toddlers, as well as original Penney Play-Pals or Ashton Drake repro
play-pal dolls.

Buying a doll for your mother, perhaps someone with Alzheimers, or maybe
your 85-year-old aunt, will always hit the spot.  Most of us 'older mothers'
had very few dolls while we were growing up.  We might be embarrassed to ASK
FOR ONE, but remember when Mother's Day or our birthday rolls around, that
we have NOT OUTGROWN DOLLS.  (We are just afraid you might think it foolish
if we ASK for one!!)  So, DON'T ASK, just buy us a weighted baby...which
resembles (and feels like!!) the real thing; and we'll be OVERJOYED that you
'knew what we REALLY wanted'!!!    In fact, there is even recent evidence
that giving an alzheimer's patient a weighted baby which feels so much like
the real ones, makes her feel 'needed' and slows the progress of the
disease.  Mothers will ALWAYS BE MOTHERS, so nurture this instinct in moms
whose children have long gone from the nest....and they will be thanking you
FOR MANY YEARS to come!!!

Yes, mothers never outgrow their need to 'mother'!

Judy w/dollJudy is ready to "retire" if she moves on!

After 22 years as owner/manager of Judy's Dolls 'n Things, a retirement hobby, Judy is ready to sell if she can find the right person to 'love her babies'!!!  She has an old 50's remodeled   l-story home of 2200 square feet (and many bedrooms), on the same lot as the  shop of 2200-plus square feet with 5000 dolls in it!! (We used to keep foster children as well, hence the many bedrooms in the home!!!)

Judy's dolls are mostly vintage, some antiques, plus lots of Lee Middleton
Pre-China (2003 or prior) weighted babies that she is especially attached to.
Many Judy and Virginia Turner porcelains from the 80's, and more recent viyls, Great American Doll Co.  Child Size dolls, Zook Kids (before Zook produced the kits)...and many other brands. For many years, she took TRADE-INS, so many older, compo and some antique dolls were obtained via that avenue.

For someone who would love to 'work at home', and is young enough, and has
the patience for the economy to turn around, Judy would work out a .'good
deal' for you to buy the home and shop which are on the same lot,  on a
COMMERCIALLY-ZONED 4-lane (11-E) near Jonesborough, the oldest town in
Tennessee.  Stock would be discounted tremendously for the right person who
buys the buildings and wants to continue with dolls!!

Give her a ring at 423/753-5983...and let's talk this over if you would
enjoy 'working at home'!  Or use the doll shop in conjunction with internet
selling...a great opportunity!!   No prices quoted without full name and
location, plus telephone number, as we do not want 'frivolous calls'!!!).

We  will pay cash for your "Doll" Story?

This doll story as well as the feature story in several of our past newsletter were sent to us by one of our customers.  We find in almost every case, the story behind the story is usually the best or most interesting story.  If you have a story about a doll or a Teddy Bear that has been in your family, write it up and send it to us.  If we decide to use it in a future newsletter, we will pay you cash for your story.  If you have ever wanted to be a writer or a blogger.  Here is your chance.  Just put doll story in our eMail and we will take it from there.  the email address to use is...

Click here to compose an email about your doll story.  If you have a digital picture in .jpg format, attach it to your email.

We are located in Homosassa, FL, but we are a mail order doll hospital.  Our shop is located in our home, which is great for commuting to work, but it is hard on the drive up business.  Deed restrictions restrict us to work that comes to us via UPS and the Post Office.  With the price of gas these days, it is likely less expensive to mail or ship it anyway.  Enclose your phone number and we will contact you just as soon as your doll arrives.  Average turn around time is two to three weeks..

Sincerely,
