Winter Legislative Conference a Success

This year's Winter Legislative Conference, held February 1-3 at the Sheraton on Capitol Square in downtown Columbus, proved to be another success! Preliminary survey results show that attendees found the workshops both informative and relevant. One attendee commented, "The workshops that I attended were informative and applicable to the work that I do at our agency."

On February 2, during the Winter Legislative Conference, OACAA along with The Ohio State University's John Glenn School of Public Affairs bestowed eight Community Action Agencies with Best Practice Awards.

WSOS Participates in White House Summer Jobs Plus Summit
WSOS was one of two agencies from across the nation selected by the Community Action Partnership to represent Community Action during the White House Summer Jobs Plus Summit on January 4. The Summit was a day-long event geared at developing strategies to help young people seeking summer employment. Kerrie Carte, WSOS development specialist, Kasey Peterson, a participant in WSOS's summer youth program, her mother Sherry Peterson, and her employer during the program, Oak Harbor Village Administrator Robert Pauley attended the Summit.

EHCAC Changes its Name
The Erie Huron Community Action Commission has changed its name to the Community Action Commission of Erie, Huron & Richland Counties, Inc. (CACEHR) to reflect its presence in Richland County. Janice Warner will continue to lead the organization as president/CEO and the agency will continue to offer effective poverty fighting programs.
CACEHR actually received a Best Practice Award at OACAA's Winter Legislative Conference for its efforts in maintaining Richland County's Community Action services while continuing to grow its capacity in Erie and Huron Counties during the transition (see Best Practice Awards article). Please update your records to reflect this name change. |

On January 27, Lifeline for the Empowerment and Development of Consumers received the Non-Profit of the Year Award from the Painesville Area Chamber of Commerce during their annual awards banquet.

MYCAP Now Offers Center for Family Economic Success

Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership (MYCAP) has a new service available to Mahoning County residents, the Center for Family Economic Success (CFES). MYCAP's mission is to alleviate and prevent the causes of poverty and CFES was developed as a framework for delivery of services to the community.

WSOS Receives Award for its Green Ohio/Weatherization Works Corps Program
During the 2011 Community Action Partnership Annual Convent ion in San Francisco, WSOS received a Community Economic Development Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award for its Green Ohio/Weatherization Works Corps program. This is the second year that CAP has presented their Community Economic Development Entrepreneurship and Innovation Awards, which recognize exemplary programs in community economic development for the Community Action Network. WSOS was one of four recipients of the award this year that honors Community Action Agencies for their outstanding leadership and innovative operations to create change for low-income individuals and families.
