                          LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
                                                    Sherry Halperin

Sherry Halperin

Dear Members and Friends,

A new year, new things to look forward to!

I hope you are planning to join us at our birthday party Jan. 11th at the La Quinta Country Club.   There will be great food, plus cake and a no host bar.  I promise we'll all have a fun time.   Gail Parent is a brilliant speaker - hysterical and so accomplished.  And, it's only $10 for members and $25 for guests and non-members.

I don't want to sound like a broken record, but it sure would help if you let us know the type of speakers and programs you would like and whether we're meeting all of your expectations.  Remember, this is your organization.

So, with resolutions made and presents returned, I wish you all a very Happy New Year - a year of blessings, peace and love.

                                                                            Best,

                                                                            Sherry

Gail ParentGAIL PARENT

It came as no surprise when, at the end of its first season on CBS, The Carol Burnett Show earned an Emmy nomination for writing. What should have been surprising was despite the series being headlined by and tailored for the talents of a woman, there was only one female among the writing nominees.

That woman, Gail Parent, had become successful as a comedy writer - a field dominated by men in the 1960s - despite her mother's advice: "Try not to be so funny-men would rather be romantic on a date than laughing all night."

Parent not only became one of the key comedy writers in the medium, but was also instrumental in creating one of the true cult series of the seventies, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

In addition she dabbled in film and theater, and wrote the best seller Sheila Levine Is Dead and Living in New York. She also contributed to the smash hit The Golden Girls and branched out into producing, a duty she assumed for Tracey Takes On..., among other shows.

A reliable talent when it comes to knowing what makes not just women, but people in general funny, Parent believes that writers needn't be categorized according to sex. "With writers it is what is on the page. By the time it gets on the page, sex doesn't count."

Parent has received 16 Emmy Nominations, winning for Tracey Takes On! and The Carol Burnett Show,  Golden Globe and Emmy nominee for The Golden Girls, awarded the Cable Ace Award for Tracey Takes On!, and the Writers Guild Award for The Carol Burnett Show.

In addition to television series, Parent has written numerous TV and feature films, including Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and The Main Event, and authored seven novels including the best seller, Sheila Levine is Dead and Living in New York.

PATTI GRIBOW - "CONVERSATIONS ABOUT..." SERIES

Patti GFeb. 13, 2011 - "Aging in Hollywood and Other Professions"

The 1980s was the first time in television history when viewers saw more positive portrayals of aging on programs such as "The Golden Girls," "Empty Nest," "Father Dowling Mysteries" and "Murder, She Wrote" where audiences followed the lives of older protagonists.  Yet, Hollywood is traditionally a younger person's venue with programming targeting the traditional 18-34 year-old consumers. As baby boomers age, and with the recent success of 88 year-old Betty White, it makes us wonder if things are changing.  Join Patti Gribow and a panel of actors, agents, casting directors and experts as they discuss the implications, and sometimes repercussions, of aging in Hollywood and other professions.

March 13, 2011 - "Marketing and Self Promotion"

The recent economic decline and the high unemployment rate make it more important than ever to sell yourself and create a positive self-image.  Whether it's during a job interview, a sales call, or a neighborhood party, marketing and promoting yourself remains important, regardless of the economy.  Numerous actors, agents, and successful business people know this first-hand.  For instance, look at entertainers such as Marilyn Monroe and Cary Grant, who created mediated personas, and more recently Madonna and Cher, who reinvent themselves regularly to target newer audiences.  Join Gribow and a panel of celebrities, agents, business people and experts as they discuss the "whys" and "hows" of marketing yourself.

SUPPORT  BOOKPALS

Tere Britton

TERE BRITTON personally thanks the community and Borders for their generosity.  Thanks to their donations, Tere recently distributed over 2,000 new books to all ten schools who participate in the BookPALS program, including two new schools recently added to the program:  Rancho Mirage Elementary and Cahuilla Elementasry in Palm Springs.

Currently Tere has 50 readers who have committed to the full school year, but needs

actors to read at Cahuilla Elementary in Palm Springs.  She also needs 'stand in' readers, a vital part of the program, who are unable to commit to full time but would be available to fill in to help keep the continuity of the program going. Training will take place in January.

BookPALS is seeking three volunteer readers for a Palm Springs Elementary School, located at 833 E. Mesquite Avenue.

Cahuilla Elementary is located off of Palm Canyon and Sunrise Way.

Training in January.  Reading would start in February.

Anyone interested, please call 760-341-9222 or e-mail Tere at TRB1803@aol.com.

BookPALS is founded on a clear premise:  Children must be exposed to the magic of books to develop a love of reading.  Who better to make that magic come alive than actors, gifted in the art of storytelling?   Our volunteer actors read aloud to at-risk children grades 1-5 at local public schools.  Help us stamp out illiteracy in the Coachella Valley!

PSWIFT and its members are proud supporters of the BookPALS Literacy Program.
Please go to our website (under Events)
to make your TAX DEDUCTIBLE donation to keep this valuable program going.

Several of our members have found an easy way to support BookPALS...
by simply adding their donation to their membership renewals, they are helping keep this much needed project going. And, it's TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
A WIN-WIN for everyone.
Thank you, Iris Anderson, Gloria Greer and Anita Rufus!
