Sherry Halperin                          LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
                                                    Sherry Halperin

Dear Members and Friends of PSWIFT,

Enjoy this packed newsletter.   It's great to see so many of our members out in the world using their talent.

Kelly Lange was hilarious at our last luncheon.   I think the highlight was her comments about on-air bloopers.   And now, we move on to the beautiful, talented, wise Lindsay Wagner.  This will be a packed house, so make your reservations early.

And, mark your calendars for our Annual Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 11th.   We're changing our format a bit and having a speaker.  I'm excited to announce that Emmy winning writer/producer Gail Parent will be joining us.   From Tracy Ullman to Carol Burnett; from The Golden Girls to Mary Tyler Moore, Gail Parent has written for them all.

If I don't see you before, a Happy Thanksgiving to you all.   Those of us living in our beautiful Valley certainly have lots to be thankful for.

                                                                            Best,

                                                                            Sherry

Actress, author and humanitarian Lindsay Wagner was presented with the Gena Award at the 2010 Broken Glass Awards presented by Palm Springs Women In Film and Television (PSWIFT).  We're thrilled to have her back in the desert as our guest speaker for the November luncheon.

Lindsay Wagner makes little distinction between her life as an actress, advocate, mother, or author.   What unites these various parts is a commitment through her work and her personal life to exploring and advancing human potential.

Lindsay first came to prominence in the critically acclaimed role of Susan Fields in The Paper Chase, but received household recognition worldwide when she broke the mold for women on television with her iconic portrayal of Jaime Sommers .  As she collaborated with the writers  "The Bionic Woman" became an inspiration around the world and in 1977 Lindsay won the Emmy for "Best Actress in a Dramatic Role".

Often referred to as the "Queen of TV Movies", her now strong influence in the media allowed her to communicate ideas to help people in their personal journey and is demonstrated in so many of her films such as:  "The Incredible Journey of Doctor Meg Laurel", the struggle between naturopathic and allopathic healthcare (1979); "I Want To Live", the moral dilemma regarding capital punishment (1983); "Child's Cry", child sexual abuse (1986);   "The Taking of Flight 847", some root complexities of terrorism (1988); "Evil In Clear River", the quiet rise of the Neo-Nazi movement in America (1988);   "Shattered Dreams" on family violence also co-produced (1991);  "Fighting For My Daughter", highlighting the problem of teen prostitution (1995 ); "Thicker Than Water", expressing compassion for the animal kingdom and the importance of family (2005); "Four Extraordinary Women", the emotional effect of breast cancer on family members (2006).

Lindsay has been long acknowledged as one of the top leading spokespersons in the U.S.  She was given a Genii award as "Performer of the Year" in 1985.

THE LAST MOON provides an insight of those who bore witness to the picturesque and splendor of St. Pierre at the turn of the century and its formidable inactive volcano, Mt. Pelée.  A page turning read set in the island paradise of Martinique, near to its coastal town of St. Pierre (often referred to as the Little Paris of the West), this book lets readers rejoice for its intoxicating colonial charm, mystical culture, and truly alluring forbidden offerings. But as the dangerous and ugly side of St. Pierre unfolds, a deplorable sight will catch them by surprise.

PATTI GRIBOW - "CONVERSATIONS ABOUT..." SERIES

Patti GFeb. 13, 2011 - "Aging in Hollywood and Other Professions"

The 1980s was the first time in television history when viewers saw more positive portrayals of aging on programs such as "The Golden Girls," "Empty Nest," "Father Dowling Mysteries" and "Murder, She Wrote" where audiences followed the lives of older protagonists.  Yet, Hollywood is traditionally a younger person's venue with programming targeting the traditional 18-34 year-old consumers. As baby boomers age, and with the recent success of 88 year-old Betty White, it makes us wonder if things are changing.  Join Patti Gribow and a panel of actors, agents, casting directors and experts as they discuss the implications, and sometimes repercussions, of aging in Hollywood and other professions.

March 13, 2011 - "Marketing and Self Promotion"

The recent economic decline and the high unemployment rate make it more important than ever to sell yourself and create a positive self-image.  Whether it's during a job interview, a sales call, or a neighborhood party, marketing and promoting yourself remains important, regardless of the economy.  Numerous actors, agents, and successful business people know this first-hand.  For instance, look at entertainers such as Marilyn Monroe and Cary Grant, who created mediated personas, and more recently Madonna and Cher, who reinvent themselves regularly to target newer audiences.  Join Gribow and a panel of celebrities, agents, business people and experts as they discuss the "whys" and "hows" of marketing yourself.
