Sherry Halperin                          LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
                                                    Sherry Halperin

Dear Members and Friends of PSWIFT,

We're off and running toward another successful, exciting year.   The networking gathering at the IWC was great.   New members met long time members (I almost said "Old" - which none of us are) and contacts for possible work were made.

Our goal is to break 200 members this season, so please bring along friends, family and anyone you know who is interested in the arts to our wonderful events.  The letter below from young Jeremy is a tribute to what PSWIFT does.

The committees for the BGA's will be announced next month.   It's going to be the Valley's "not to be missed" event.

I'll see you all at the Kelly Lange luncheon.   Trust me - she's a hoot and will be very entertaining as well as giving us tons of information as to what it was like hosting a network show, anchoring NBC news in L.A. for 30 years and becoming an accomplished mystery writer.

See you in a few weeks at the Renaissance in Palm Springs.

                                                      Best,

                                                     Sherry

OCTOBER LUNCHEON

PSWIFT GUEST SPEAKER LUNCHEON
Welcomes
KELLY LANGE

Journalist,  News Anchor, Best-selling Author

Kelly Lange    SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2010

    Student Members: $5
    Non Members: $50

Those of us who lived in Los Angeles and watched TV news back in the 70's through the 90's, will instantly recognize Kelly Lange as the co-anchor on NBC's nightly newscasts.   She was the FIRST woman to be a news anchor in Los Angeles, and TV Guide reported she was the first local newscaster to be paid $1 million per year.

Kelly Lange has won several Emmy awards, and even served as the Emmy program's host.  She and Michael Landon co-hosted the Tournament of Roses Parade, was the regular guest host of Tomorrow with Tom Snyder, and a regular guest host of NBC's Today Show.

Her career started with simply getting in a line in Buena Park back in 1967.  "It seemed they were giving something away."  That something turned out to be two positions as "Ladybirds" on KABC radio.  The lucky duo would become the first female traffic/weather reporters in the LA area to patrol in helicopters.  Kelly Lange was one of the two chosen and got the 6am to 9am shift.  Zipped into a silver-lamé jumpsuit, thus began Kelly Lange's career as a news reporter, spotting news and reporting traffic for KABC, later joining NBC-4 in 1971.

She began writing fiction and mysteries, partially to relieve insomnia from working the 11pm newscast, and soon became a full-time mystery novelist.  Her popular mystery fiction books include The Reporter, Dead File, and Graveyard Shift, featuring fictional TV news anchor Maxi Poole, plus Trophy Wife and Gossip.

Please allow time after her talk, as she plans to sell and AUTOGRAPH copies of her books.

We are delighted to offer the opportunity to get up close and personal with Kelly Lange.

What PSWIFT Can Do

By PSWIFT Member Jeremy Goodlander

Jeremy & Jennifer
Jeremy & Jennifer

I started my film career late in life. At least I think so.  I'm almost 30 now but for as long as I can remember I've always wanted to be a film director. Growing up my family didn't have cable, so instead of being hooked on Bart Simpson I was falling in love with Katherine Hepburn in "The Philadelphia Story". Instead of Jerry Seinfeld on late nights we were watching old John Wayne movies. Our weeknights and weekends were full of movie marathons. My parents usually brought home a new movie every night and when they didn't it was back to the classics. I was in a film school from the time I was 8 until I was 18.

After high school I joined the Navy. I fell in love with firefighting. I still wrote stories and planned films out in my head, but after a marriage and a quick child I figured those dreams were long gone. It wasn't until after my Naval Service was over and my firefighting dreams dashed by Arthritis that I took another look at a life in film.

I had one problem, or so I thought. I lived in Palm Springs and the center of the movie-making world lay 200 miles west of me. How the hell was I going to break into the business when I was so far outside of the business?

I took a small film class at the local community college and began making small short films. Nothing big, they were films my kids could watch and laugh at. I was happy with what they were but I wanted more. I knew I was capable of producing something stronger. I met a guy in this film class whom I became instant friends with and together we started working on making our dreams come true.

Jonathon Mosack and I made only a handful of short films together but his influence on me may very well last the rest of my life. On pure chance we ended up in a different class together, a public relations class. We had a group project that required us to make a press kit for an existing organization. Jon said he had the perfect company; the Palm Springs Women in Film. Well I jumped at the idea, even though I had no idea what this organization was. Hey it had Film in the title, I was sold.

We met with Fern Field Brooks and few days later and took it upon ourselves to rebrand a yearly conference she held with the organization. She said she wanted something hip that would attract the younger generation. Well, we were younger  (though the hip thing was up for debate) and we made a deal not to leave the room until we had something that would appeal to a younger audience. It took about thirty minutes before we came up with "Inside Film and Television: Bringing Hollywood to the Desert." We were happy with the outcome, as was Mrs. Brooks. Little did I know that one afternoon would change my life for the next six months.

                                                                        ******

We attended the conference and Mrs. Brooks introduced me to wide array of people and at the end of the night my head was spinning with all the opportunities in front of me. I lay in bed with my wife that night floating on air as she desperately tried to pull me back to earth. Not long after that a Ms. Gloria Greer asked if some of my film compadres and I would serve as studio audience for her cable show. Of course we agreed. The day was a success and when it aired on the cable channel my kids ran around the house claiming their daddy was a T.V. star.

This could go on and on. In the six months I have been affiliated with the Palm Springs Women in Film I have had intimate conversations with heads of major film studios, filmed demos with established producers and have more contacts and connections than I thought ever possible. I have made a small but productive living with the network of the organization and make sure to take time out of a now busy schedule of editing short films and looking over feature length scripts to attend any and all of the organization's many events.

I'm at the beginning of my dream and thanks to the Palm Springs Women in Film I may just be able to see the entire dream come true.

SUPPORT  BOOKPALS

Tere Britton

TERE BRITTON, our membership chair and BookPALS coordinator is hard at work setting up her fall schedule.

BookPALS is founded on a clear premise:  Children must be exposed to the magic of books to develop a love of reading.  Who better to make that magic come alive than actors, gifted in the art of storytelling?

Our volunteer actors read aloud to at-risk children grades 1-5 at local public schools.  Help us stamp out illiteracy in the Coachella Valley!

PSWIFT and its members are proud supporters of the BookPALS Literacy Program.
Please go to our website (under Events)
to make your TAX DEDUCTIBLE donation to keep this valuable program going.
Several of our members have found an easy way to support BookPALS... by simply adding their donation to their membership renewals, they are helping keep this much needed project going. And, it's TAX DEDUCTIBLE! A WIN-WIN for everyone. PSWIFT thanks Diane Ahlstrom, Gloria Guttman and Trudy Kapner for their generosity.
