LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Members and Friends of PSWIFT,
Another season of PSWIFT is wrapping up. You may be going on vacation to cooler valleys but your diligent board will be hard at work planning what is shaping up to be a fabulous next season.
The Broken Glass Awards are set for March 5, 2011. So mark your calendar and be thinking of how you will impact our major fund raiser. We'll need lots of volunteers to make it happen and lots of people in the seats on March 5th.
I wish you all a safe, cool, happy and successful summer. We'll all be only an email away.
Best,
Sherry

We must thank GLENN GAINOR, once again, for taking time to come and speak at our May luncheon. We applaud his efforts to keep film production in California. His anecdotes about the history of movie production in Hollywood were a wonderful trip down memory lane. We were especially delighted to hear about the history of PALM SPRINGS (Hollywood's back yard) with respect to filmmaking. We will be receiving more information on what WE can do to help bring filming back to our State. Stay tuned...
SUNDAY WITH PATTI GRIBOW, PATTIE DALY CARUSO, and GLORIA GREER - our last FREE Members Only gathering for this season was a joy! Patti G - always a gracious hostess - filled her kitchen with goodies and lemonade. There was a lot of time to visit, get to know some of our newest members, then we got down to business. We learned how these three amazing women got started, broke barriers, and have had such continued longevity in a very tough industry.
Their celebrity stories were delightful. They discussed how they research prior to an interview - everything from the Wall Street Journal to the National Enquirer! We also learned how their shows are produced, where the money comes from, and how it's spent. It was the perfect way to end this season's informal programs, and we look forward to bringing you more amazing hosts next season.

EASY WAY TO SUPPORT PSWIFT & BOOKPALS |
|

Our membership chairperson and BookPALS coordinator, Tere Britton, has found a way to help support the BookPALS program. After chatting with Pattie Daly Caruso at a recent PSWFT event, Tere decided to gather some gold jewelry she wasn't wearing to see what it was worth and went to Out of the Box Gold Store. She was happily surprised with what was offered and was told that the store would donate 10% of her take (from THEIR profit) to her favorite charity. So, both Tere and PSWIFT came out ahead.
If you're thinking of selling some gold jewelry, go to Out of the Box Gold Store. Please name PSWIFT for BookPALS as your charity. The number is 760-836-9247 and they are located on the frontage road next to Tony Roma's in Palm Desert. If the pieces have stones, they will gladly remove them.
PSWIFT has committed to help fund BookPALS and this is a win win situation for all.

OPERATION SUN RUNNER - CDs & DVDs for Marines |
Operation Sun Runner. Over the past five years, musicians and recording companies from the desert, and from around the country, have donated several thousand new CDs to our Marines through Operation Sun Runner.
This year, we are again asking any interested musicans or labels to consider contributing new CDs to Operation Sun Runner. We will be working through the Armed Services YMCA, Twentynine Palms, to ensure these CDs get into care packages and gift packs going to our Marines overseas as well as to their families living in the desert.
If you are a musician and would like to donate CDs to Operation Sun Runner, please send them to: Operation Sun Runner c/o The Sun Runner Magazine PO Box 2171 Joshua Tree, CA 92252
For more information on how to participate, please call (760)366-2700 or email publisher@thesunrunner.com. If you are not a recording artist but would like to contribute to Operation Sun Runner, please note that new DVDs, CDs, and family items are also very much in demand.
Thanks to all the musicians and labels who have donated to Operation Sun Runner and especially to our Marine families.

The Sun Runner Magazine has opened the submission period for the fourth annual Desert Writers Issue. The Sun Runner is seeking submissions of poetry, short fiction, essays, book excerpts, and prose from writers throughout the California desert region, or writers with strong ties to the region.
Each year, the Desert Writers Issue has grown. Submissions are juried by a panel of writers, editors, educators, and readers, with the highest rated contributions appearing in the August/September issue of The Sun Runner. In September, the magazine hosts the Desert Writers Celebration, with all past and present contributors invited to attend, read, and meet fellow desert writers and poets.
Previous year's celebrations have included a "Sheeple Burger" barbecue (in honor of a short story by Tom Loret), and readings by authors such as Deanne Stillman, and Mary Sojourner (who also hosted a successful women's writing workshop).
This year's Desert Writers Issue will include a special section: Letters Home, a section for active duty military personnel and their families stationed in the desert. Letters Home contributions may be short essays on life apart, military life at home or abroad, or personal reflections, thoughts, poems, or letters that share insight into what it is like to serve our country, or live a military life, based in the desert. Prizes are being solicited from the business community for the top contributors to this section.
Full submission guidelines for the Desert Writers Issue and Letters Home special section are easily available at www.thesunrunner.com. Deadline for submissions is July 6, 2010. Questions should be sent to Steve Brown at publisher@thesunrunner.com. |
