LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear PSWIFT Members,
Happy March! We have so much to look forward to this month. I'm hoping each of you will support your organization and attend the Broken Glass Awards on the 6th, chaired by TV host Patti Gribow and Inland Empire Film Commissioner Sheri Davis. It's sure to be an amazing evening. Among those we're honoring is Denise DuBarry Hay - our past president who has dedicated so much time and energy to assure our success. Let's all show Denise how much we appreciate her amazing work.
Talking about Denise, March 21st is Dishing With Denise - our Sunday seminar where you learn from the expert. Her topic - Direct Marketing. Space is limited, so sign up now by calling the office.
Sadly (not really, I was in the Caribbean) I missed the Richard Lewis luncheon but heard rave reviews from those who attended. When you look at the roster we've assembled, it's quite amazing. We're attracting the top of the top as speakers. If there is a topic or area that you would like us to cover that hasn't been booked, let us know. PSWIFT is about mentoring, educating and networking. We're here to help you - our creative community.
Best,
Sherry Halperin
PSWIFT President

EVENT WRAP-UPS... |
(Sheri Davis Networking with Richard Lewis)
Saturday, Feb. 20th, while the rest of the country was dealing with freezing wind and snow, we had another picture perfect day in La Quinta.
We have to take a moment to thank Richard Lewis for taking time out of his busy schedule to spend time with us, and he packed the house!
His anecdotes about his early career 'learning experiences' were both amusing and educational, such as his first opportunity working on a film to show his 'stuff' when Martin Ritt asked how he would direct a particular scene. This was his big chance. Richard pulled out all the stops: he'd do it with great tracking shots, down the street, through a window, zooming in on..... He was abruptly cut off. He'd been asked how he'd direct, not how he'd film a scene - and quickly learned 'shoot' is how it looks, 'direct' is how the characters interact.
As a producer, he discussed the disadvantages of micro-managing. If you tell a person exactly what you want, that's exactly what you'll get -- and you often miss the chance to see what other possibilities are out there.
His anecdotes about CSI: were wonderful. How he utilized the look of film noir, the amazing visual techniques, the choices of cutting-edge music, and strong female characters in roles we hadn't seen before. Other topics included the current trend in TV series since 9/11 to 'get the bad guy,' the computer generation's overall isolation, and how shows like CSI: draw the viewer into the story so they become a participant, and so much more we don't have the space for here. In all, it was a day none of us will forget. Thank you again, Richard!
Our book sales went very well, and our authors were very generous in their donations back to PSWIFT. A total of $140!! Thank you Fern Field, Gloria Guttman, Christine Fleming and Jean Lee Porter.
Our "Sunday with... Elizabeth Cook, News Anchor KMIR6," held at Sherry Halperin's home, was a delightful afternoon. We watch the news on TV, but don't think any of us had any idea of what goes on behind the scenes. I think we were all a little surprised to learn that those "on the scene" spots often are a one-man (or woman!) operation. The reporter drives the truck, sets up the camera, checks the lighting, films their own reports, then heads back to the studio to edit it in time for air. They learn to do it all. Watching her discuss an overview of the current status of TV news, how she rose to her current position, and plans for the future, Elizabeth's animated personality reminded some of a young Katie Couric. This dynamic woman is going to go very far!
The many faces of Elizabeth:
