PATTI GRIBOW

Patti G
As part of the CSUSB Indian Wells Theater season, PATTI GRIBOW will host "Conversations with...," a series of one-night-only, intimate, "living-room" discussions with three fascinating individuals and an amazing group.  They have all achieved great celebrity, but only at the Indian Wells Theater will the public be able to meet them, hear about their experiences and ask them what their lives have been like.

You can be a part of the interview process during the question and answer segment as Patti chats with celebrities such as comedian/actor, Jerry Van Dyke, and Peter Marshall. She will also "dish" with some of her "gal pals" and former "Golddiggers" about their days in Hollywood, on the road with Dean, and their lives today!

The Broadway Series kicks off Oct. 30 with Hal Linden (television's Barney Miller) starring in the critically acclaimed Tuesdays with Morrie .

Here's your chance to stay after the play and participate in a post-show discussion. Ask questions or just listen to the conversation with host PATTI GRIBOW on the first Sunday of each of the Broadway plays. Members of the cast and crew, or both, will return to the stage after the performance to talk about the play and answer your questions.

Tickets can be purchased by calling the Indian Wells Theater Box Office at (760) 341-2883, ext. 78154. Make sure to mention that you are a PWIFT member so that the organization can benefit from your purchase.

SHOOT THE HERO

Shoot the Hero

You can now view the trailer for SHOOT THE HERO, produced by DENISE DuBARRY HAY, written and directed by Christian Sesma.

Kiss the bride - Take the Money  SHOOT THE HERO!

While shopping for wedding rings, a young couple (Jason Mewes & Samantha Lockwood) unintentionally become the only eyewitnesses to a jewelry store heist gone awry as rival gunmen (Paul Sloan, Nick Turturro) turn on each other. Desperate to rectify the botched job, an underground mob boss (Danny Trejo) dispatches a mysterious hit man to find the soon-to-be husband and wife and clean up the mess. Seemingly at random, two brothers (Nic Nac Nicotera, Mike Hatton) find themselves stranded on their way to work after a series of misfortunes leaves them in a precarious predicament. Eventually forced to hitchhike, they find a ride from none other than our young engaged couple. But as the night unfolds everyone quickly discovers that their lives are somehow connected. And as bullets fly and plots thicken, what follows is a night of thugs, guns, laughs and love in an action-packed romp as seen through the eyes of talented writer/director Christian Sesma.

You can read more about this locally produced film in the August 2009 issue of Palm Springs Life magazine.  And, visit: http://www.shootthehero.com

NATIONAL FILM REGISTRY
SUPPORT WIFV 2009 NOMINATIONS FOR THE NATIONAL REGISTRY

WIFV logo

Please lend your support to WIFV's 2009 nominations for the National Film Registry.  (click on logo above)

The Library of Congress maintains the National Film Registry to honor "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant films" that are at least 10 years old at the time of their inclusion in the Registry.  The selected films are "works of enduring significance to American culture." Selection also brings the resources of the Library of Congress to find "missing" films and encourages their preservation and exhibition.

Women in Film & Video continues its multi-year project to have more women-made films included in the National Film Registry with these nominations.  Although women have been involved with movies since the camera was invented, their work is severely underrepresented in this national collection. (I know, you are surprised!)   In 2009, WIFV is nominating the following films to the National Film Registry:

1) "The Big House" (1930) written by Frances Marion;
2) "New Sensations in Sound" (1949) animated/produced by Mary Ellen Bute;
3) "Growing Up Female" (1971) written/directed by Julia Reichert and Jim Klein;
4) "Will" (1981) by Jessie Maple;
5) "Big" (1988) directed by Penny Marshall.

You don't need to choose which one to vote for, we need you to support all five.

Why these films?  Frances Marion was the first women to win an Oscar for an original screenplay.  She won it back to back for "The Big House" and "The Champ".  In more than 80 years of Oscar awards, only 14 women have won for original screenplay (way more than have won for directing, but...).  Frances Marion remains one of the most prolific screenwriters in the industry and her scenarios and screenplays launched and reinvigorated many careers.

"New Sensations in Sound" was used by RCA as a promotional piece and often ran as a short before feature films.  Ms. Bute's animations combined abstract images with music to create visual collages that focused the viewer's attention on the music.  Her experimentation with shapes and music is so successful that you forget you might be watching an eggbeater!  This film received a preservation grant from the New York Women in Film & Television Film Preservation Fund.

"Growing Up Female" by Julia Reichert and Jim Klein is considered "the first film of the modern women's movement". Feminist films are not represented in the Registry so we want to start with the "first".  As a vital document of the women's liberation movement it certainly meets the minimum requirements for inclusion.  Since it also serves as a vital resource for young women who have little idea of how much has changed for women in barely one generation, it should be housed at the Library of Congress.

"Will" is "the first feature-length independent film produced by an African-American woman." Jessie Maple, was also the first African-American woman to become a member of IATSE (New York, 19750).  "Will" follows a drug addict and a 12-year-old orphan as they develop a "family".  Filmed on location in Harlem, it received the Special Merit Award at the Athens International Film Festival in 1981 and stars Loretta Devine in her first feature film.

"Big" is our next attempt to get director Penny Marshall represented in the Film Registry.  (For some reason they didn't chose "A League of Their Own" last year.)  Besides, "Big" received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay, was the first film directed by a woman to gross more than $100 million in domestic box office, and gave Tom Hanks his first Oscar nomination.

ERIC BANA'S FILM "LOVE THE BEAST" MAKES WEST COAST PREMIERE AT OPENING NIGHT OF
WHEELS ON REELS FILM FESTIVAL

Without a doubt, one of this summer's hottest film stars is Australian film actor, Eric Bana. He kicked off the summer season as the heavily made-up villain in "Star Trek," then co-starred with Adam Sandler in the comedy/drama "Funny People." Then, he starred opposite Rachel McAdams in "The Time Traveler's Wife", based on the best-selling novel.

But months before this unbelievable string of back-to-back box office hits put Eric Bana in the summer spotlight, his directorial debut made its US premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York this past spring. The documentary entitled "Love The Beast" written and directed by Bana, is the story of a 25-year love affair with his '74 Ford Falcon XB Coupe.

For the first time ever, members of the automotive community will have a venue in which they can meet trend-setting filmmakers that use their automobiles and products.  These filmmakers influence millions of television and movie audiences and they are members of an exploding new cottage industry developing film projects that reach a worldwide audience through Internet video websites.
As a result of a tragic automobile accident that killed three Palm Springs area high school teens in 2007, proceeds from the Wheels On Reels Film Festival will help fund safe-driving programs for area teens.
