April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month
According to the American Cancer Society, oral cancer affects more than 35,000 people in the US each year. The key to survival is early detection - this is where your regular visits to the dentist come in! After your hygiene appointment your dentist will check your mouth, lips, tongue and throat for signs of abnormal cell growth. Also, your dentist and hygienist can help educate you on the risk factors for oral cancer - the biggest being smoking and heavy drinking. Be sure to stay up to date with your regularly scheduled dental visits and talk to your dentist about any abnormalities. |
Updates on Periodontal Disease and Treatment
Recently, Dr. Comfort and the hygiene team traveled to Buffalo, NY, for a conference on Soft Tissue Management. We continue to make an effort to stay up-to-date on the latest trends in the treatment of the soft tissue - including gingivitis and periodontal disease.
Do your gums bleed when you floss? You very likely are suffering from gingivitis and may be in the early stages of periodontal disease. Without proper treatment and a dedicated home care regimen, bone loss and subsequent loss of tooth structure can result. If you feel you're at risk for soft tissue disease, discuss your options with your hygienist and dentist at your next recare visit. |
