Greetings!

We hope that this winter update finds you surviving the cold and snow. Puxatawney Phil has predicted an early spring, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

The wintry conditions prevented Dr. Silvestri from attending the Continuing Education course on Implants, but the seminar has been rescheduled for April and he continues to look forward to learning more about this great restorative option!  Scroll down to read an article and learn more about dental implants and their applications.

Did you know that February is Children's Dental Health Month?  Dr. Silvestri and Dr. Comfort welcome young patients at the office and urge parents to focus on their children's oral health at home. All children should have their first dental visit by age 1 or within 6 months of getting their first tooth.  We would love to see your kids, so call the office and set up an appointment.  Check out some useful links and an article below to learn more.

About Dental Implants

With nearly 40 million Americans having lost some or all of their teeth, dental implants are a popular option for replacing those lost teeth.  Implants are comfortable, attractive and will help you regain confidence in your smile.  They are an alternative to bridges, partials or entures.  Implants can look and feel like natuarl teeth.  An implant simply is a metallic titanium object that is inserted into your jawbone to act like a natural tooth root.  Titaium isn't recognized by the immune system, so it is not rejected.  It integrates with the jawbone to give a firm support to the artficial replacement that it will support.

Reasons for Implants

  • No worrying about dentures falling out
  • Improves biting pressure
  • Restores proper chewing ability which leads to a better diet and improved overall health
  • Eliminates tooth shifting
  • Long-term comfort and convenience
  • Look and feel like natural teeth
  • Increase your self-confidence
Are you a candidate for Implants?

Ideally, candidates for dental implants should be in good health, have healthy gums, good oral habits for the aftercare and a healthy amount of bone to support the implants.  Your dentist can best evaluate your personal situation and determine if dental implants are the best option for you.

What is the Procedure for Dental Implants?

Implant placement does require several appointments of a period of time.  The steps usually followed are:
  1. The implant is inserted into the bone and allowed to heal for up to several months.  (Sometimes it is possible to immediately restore the implant, but this depends on the specific case).
  2. A healing cap is placed over the implant while the implant integrates with the bone.
  3. A definitive restoration in fabricated after the entire healing phase is complete.

Children's Dental Health

It is generally recommended that an infant be seen by a dentist by the age of 1 or within 6 months after his or her first tooth comes in.

What Happens at the First Dental Visit?

The first dental visit is usually short and involves very little treatment. This visit gives your child an opportunity to meet the dentist in a non-threatening and friendly way. Some dentists may ask the parent to sit in the dental chair and hold their child during the examination. The parent may also be asked to wait in the reception area during part of the visit so that a relationship can be built between your child and your dentist.

During the exam, your dentist will check all of your child's existing teeth for decay, examine your child's bite, and look for any potential problems with the gums, jaw, and oral tissues. If indicated, the dentist or hygienist will clean any teeth and assess the need for fluoride. He or she will also educate parents about oral healthcare basics for children and discuss dental developmental issues and answer any questions.

Topics your dentist may discuss with you might include:

  1. Good oral hygiene practices for your child's teeth and gums and cavity prevention
  2. Fluoride needs
  3. Oral Habits (thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, lip sucking)
  4. Developmental milestones
  5. Teething
  6. Proper nutrition
  7. Schedule of dental checkups. Many dentists like to see children every 6 months to build up the child's comfort and confidence level in visiting the dentist, to monitor the development of the teeth, and promptly treat any developing problems.

You will be asked to complete medical and health information forms concerning the child during the first visit. Come prepared with the necessary information.

When Should Children Get Their First Dental X-Ray?

There are no hard-and-fast rules for when to start dental X-rays. Some children who may be at higher risk for dental problems (for example, those prone to baby bottle tooth decay or those with cleft lip/palate) should have X-rays taken earlier than others. Usually, most children will have had X-rays taken by the age of 5 or 6. As children begin to get their adult teeth around the age of 6, X-rays play an important role in helping your dentist. X-rays allow your dentist to see if all of the adult teeth are growing in the jaw, to look for bite problems and to determine if teeth are clean and healthy.
