Summer Reading Contest
May 1 through August 31st
Nickajack is participating in a fun summer reading project: the Scholastic Summer Challenge, featuring the for Read for the World Record.
The current world record stands at 64,213,141 minutes!
Studies show that kids who read over the summer maintain the reading skills developed during the school year. This summer-long reading campaign is designed to motivate all children to read more so they maintain and improve their academic skills.
The world record attempt begins May 1 and concludes August 31, 2012. The total logged reading minutes, along with the top 20 schools, will be published in the 2013 edition of the Scholastic Book of World Records.
Here are a few simple ways to help your child become a record-breaking reader:
- Set a goal together and encourage reading throughout the summer, with library visits, story time at home, and conversations about books. Let your child see you reading.
- Encourage your child to participate and track reading minutes either with a paper log or online at www.scholastic.com/summer. It's a kid-friendly, safe online community where students can be part of a record-setting global team, log reading minutes, and enjoy activities geared for all ages.
- Track our school's progress through the Summer Challenge interactive map.
- Download summer reading booklists chosen specifically for your child's age at www.scholastic.com/parents/resources/collection/scholastic-summer-challenge.
For our Nickajack students, we will have prizes! Rising 1st through 5th graders are eligible. Read between May 1 and August 31, and log your reading minutes on the Scholastic web site or reading log sheet to be turned in at the start of the fall school year.
The student with the most reading minutes from each grade will win a $10 gift certificate towards the fall Nickajack Bookfair. Winners announced in September.

Cobb Schools Foundation Volunteers of the Year
Gretchen and Steven Fuller
The Cobb Schools Foundation along with the Atlanta Hawks hosted the 1st Annual Volunteer of the Year Awards. One volunteer from each school in the district was chosen by the faculty and staff to be honored. Each recipient, along with the principal of their school, attended a luncheon on May 4th. Nickjacak was fortunate enough to be able to recognize a husband and wife team! Gretchen and Steven Fuller were chosen by the faculty and staff of Nickajack as this year's recipients. They are pictured above with their children, Naomi, 4th grade and Isaac, 5th grade. Gretchen and Steven have been very dedicated volunteers over their many years at Nickajack. Both work full time, yet because they have a passion for making a difference, they make volunteering at our school a priority.
Gretchen has served as our Literacy Chair which includes managing the bookfairs as well as working with the Mrs. Parks and her staff on literacy priorities for the school for many years now. She also served as one of PTA Vice Presidents and worked to improve the after school enrichment programs this past year.
Steven has also been very involved. He has served as our PTA Treasurer in the past and was instrumental in setting up our Fathers Being Involved (or the FBI) group.
Thank you Steven and Gretchen for your service and dedication!
