5 Tips to Avoid Errors on the FAFSA

Applying for financial aid is much easier than most people think.  Here are five tips to help you avoid making a mistake on the FAFSA.

1. Apply Early!

Don't wait until the night before a deadline to start your FAFSA.  Complete the application as soon as possible because financial aid funds are limited.  Many types of financial aid are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

2. Use Your Legal Name

Enter your name exactly as it appears on your Social Security Card.  Double check to make sure social security number and date of birth are correct.  If any of these are incorrect, your application might be rejected.

3. Read the Directions

Each question has detailed directions.  If there is a question you do not know how to answer, look at the "Tips and Hints" box on the right side of your computer screen.  The directions tell you exactly how to answer the questions.

4. Check Your Answers

If you find a mistake, you can correct it - even after you submit the application.  All you need to do is go back to the online application and you can make updates.

5. Ask for Help

If you have a question or are confused, talk to an expert.  Use the online chat feature on the web site.  Call your high school guidance counselor. Call the financial aid office at the college.  Call FAME.  We can help you.
