Have you wondered what types of jobs will be available in Maine in the future? According to recently released data from the Maine Department of Labor, the five careers below are where the largest growth is anticipated between now and 2018. All of these careers require some type of education after high school.

1.)  Network systems and data communications analysts: expected to grow by 39.6% 

 

Tasks performed: Tasks include analyzing, designing, testing and evaluating network systems and researching and recommending network and data communication hardware and software for clients.

Education typically required: Bachelor's degree

Median Salary in Maine: $60,300

 

 

2.)  Surgical technologists: expected to grow by 22.5%

 

Tasks performed: Tasks include assisting in operations, under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. Surgical techs may help set up operating room, prepare and transport patients, adjust lights and equipment, pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeon's assistants, hold retractors, cut sutures, and count supplies.

Education typically required: Associate's or higher level degree

3.)  Respiratory therapists: expected to grow by 20.3%

 

Tasks performed: Tasks include assessing, treating, and caring for patients with breathing disorders.  Respiratory therapists assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care, including the supervision of respiratory therapy technicians. Tasks also include initiating and conducting therapeutic procedures, maintaining patient records, and operating equipment.

Education typically required: Associate's or higher level degree

4.)  Physician assistants: expected to grow by 20.2%

 

Tasks performed: Tasks include providing healthcare services typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of a physician. Physician assistants conduct complete physicals, provide treatment, counsel patients, and prescribe medication in some cases.
