1.) File online by going to www.FAFSA.gov
This is the official FAFSA web site. Do not use any other site to file your federal financial aid application.
2. ) Know your college's financial aid deadline
Submit your financial aid application before the college's deadline! If you miss a deadline, you may miss out on thousands of dollars in financial aid!
3.) Estimate your income
Don't wait to file the FAFSA until your federal income taxes are complete. Estimate using the prior year information, your last pay stub or your W-2. You can make corrections to the FAFSA after your income taxes are completed.
4.) Enter your social security number correctly and use your legal name as it appears on your social security card
If you use a nickname or provide the wrong social security number, your FAFSA will be rejected. You will need to resubmit your application and the delay could cause you to miss a deadline.
5.) Filing the FAFSA is FREE
Don't pay to file the FAFSA! If you have questions or need assistance, FREE help is available. You can talk to your guidance counselor, the financial aid office at the college you want to attend or contact FAME (1-800-228-3734).
