Director's Corner |

This issue of The Slice follows a whirlwind summer that is over much too soon! Last night I was shocked to see the clock insisting on 7:30 when the sky suggested 9:00 pm. And today my space heater warms my sandaled feet, nudging me toward tights and loafers. Mittens and boots can't be far behind. Ugh!
Nevertheless, over this too-brief summer we had an excellent time at AALL Annual Meeting in Boston. Many of you chatted with Theresa McCue, who single-handedly staffed our table (below) in the exhibit hall at the Hynes Convention Center. Others joined us for our Annual Meet & Greet aboard the Spirit of Boston, where the weather cooperated and we had a wonderful evening on the water.
On the Fri. before the Annual Meeting, a majority of the members of the NELLCO Board of Directors participated in a day-long workshop on the Six Thinking Hats, which I've mentioned before in this newsletter. Our certified Six Hats facilitator, Phil Shearrer, joined us from Columbia, MO, where his wife, Cindy, is a law librarian at Mizzou! Serendipity? Needless to say he understood our world and nothing was lost in translation.
The Six Hats training was very well-received by the Board. There was a consensus among the group that the concept of 'lateral thinking' embodied by the Six Hats would be a valuable tool not only in their work as NELLCO Board members, but also in their respective law libraries. So, at the NELLCO Symposium 2013 the Six Hats training will feature prominently. Phil will join us once again to offer 4 half-day workshops over the course of the 2-day Symposium, March 14-15, 2013 (mark those calendars and watch the NELLCO site for more information!). Each workshop will be limited to 30 participants. I hope many of you will plan to join us here in Albany. I think you'll find the Six Hats to be an excellent addition to your toolbox!
You'll notice a new recommended reading feature, TitleTale, in this issue of The Slice. In my work as Executive Director of NELLCO I draw on literature from several different disciplines. I peruse the law librarianship/legal information current awareness materials, but I also keep up on developments in the nonprofit arena, the association world, leadership, facilitation, HR, strategic planning, governance, marketing, higher ed, new technologies, social media, etc. I come across really helpful resources in these areas and I've decided to share the best ones here. I'm starting with David Sibbet's Visual Meetings. I hope you enjoy!
Yours In Collaboration,
Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki

Consortia Collaborate on Acquisition of Mosio's Text a Librarian to Leverage Buying Power!
Library consortia leaders are a highly collaborative group. Through the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC), we share our ideas, expertise and experience with one another in a regular and open exchange via semi-annual f-2-f meetings, ad hoc webinars, and a robust list-serv. In the past year we have been discussing how we might pool our memberships through interconsortial licensing to leverage our buying power. Lyrasis has taken a leadership position in these efforts and just this week has announced an offer on Text a Librarian (TaL). Now NELLCO extends this offer to you.
TaL combines chat, email, SMS, and Web Widgets for an
all-in-one patron support software solution for libraries. TAL enables patrons to communicate with you the way they want, and lets you respond via a single, web-based dashboard.
TaL is currently used in over 800 libraries in the U.S. and Canada, and is the only all-in-one patron support solution created specifically for libraries.
To get the most-favored pricing on this software, the participating consortia need to bring together 100 libraries by Nov. 15. Please review the offer and let us know (via the NELLCO online store) if you wish to subscribe. The subscription period will run from 12/1-11/30 each year, and will be billed through NELLCO as always.
We're very excited about this first interconsortial effort for NELLCO, and hope other opportunities will emerge in the future.
Please be in touch if you have any questions or concerns! |

Titletale: A good book and why I like it!
Save the time of the reader! - Ranganathan's Principle #4
Visual Meetings: How Graphics, Sticky Notes & Idea Mapping Can Transform Productivity, by David Sibbet.
Have you been wowed by a TED presenter's visuals? Have you gone to meetings run by skilled facilitators and been amazed at their skill with a sharpie and a flip chart? Are you a visual thinker and learner, or have members of your team who are? Even if you're stick-figure challenged, this excellent book can help you make your group work more 'sticky' though the use of visual idea mapping.
Author David Sibbet will hold your hand throughout, starting small (identifying 'seed shapes,' how to draw a circle, a triangle, horizontal and vertical lines), providing the details (how DO you hang paper on the wall and get it straight?), and leading the reader through gradually more complex uses of visuals (for idea generation, consensus building, goal setting, project management). If you already have artistic talent, Sibbet will show you how to use it effectively to enhance outcomes in your work. If you don't have a creative bone in your body, this book will help you develop your graphic skills so you can wield a sharpie with new confidence! Happy reading! |
