From the blog:

The mission of the Society for Scholarly Publishing is "[t]o advance scholarly publishing and communication, and the professional development of its members through education, collaboration, and networking." The Scholarly Kitchen is a moderated and independent blog aimed to help fulfill this mission by bringing together differing opinions, commentary, and ideas, and presenting them openly.

President's Message

Paul M. George, President

Associate Dean and Director of Biddle Law Library at the University of Pennsylvania School of Law

Greetings,

I am very pleased to take over the responsibility of president of NELLCO. I have worked in NELLCO member libraries for 18 years and have been able to serve on the board of Directors for the past 10 years. During this time I have seen both tremendous changes in our profession and our libraries as well as in NELLCO. With Tracy Thompson-Przylucki NELLCO has grown from a regional consortium to a national and international organization serving libraries and their librarians across the globe. We have gone from an organization designed to help libraries purchase electronic resources at a discount to one that provides direct services to its members as well as their libraries. This is demonstrated most recently by the new NELLCO Symposium held this past spring as well as the numerous services and opportunities that are available to us.

NELLCO's growth and leadership reminds me of the quotation from hockey player Wayne Gretzky who said, "Skate where the puck is going, not where it has been." Under Tracy's leadership, NELLCO has truly been out on the forefront of law librarianship. We have been small enough to take risks and fortunately have been lucky enough to have members who have explored projects, some of which have been great successes and some which can be described as good learning experiences. But all of them have demonstrated NELLCO's rapid response to changes in our profession and our leadership in being on the forefront in many areas of concern for law librarians. A current example of this leadership is a plan still in development that would result in the creation of a shared print repository, permitting NELLCO to be the home of "the last" copy for all those libraries which find they no longer have space for reporters that have historically been at the heart of our print collections. We are developing this project with a sister organization, Legal Information Preservation Alliance, so please stay tuned for more details.

I know that in the coming two years, we will undoubtedly have additional project advancing our profession, which we have not yet identified. The Board of Directors has instituted a new committee structure to provide greater input from Board members into the planning and development of NELLCO programs, and the initial discussions have already indicated some great ideas. I also hope that we will soon be able to announce additional programs and services for additional members, including students and those who are new to our profession. Of course, I also hope that all of you will contribute your ideas for programs and areas of growth for NELLCO. Please challenge us an organization.

As I start my new term as president, please let me thank Karen Quinn, our new past-president, who has provided me with a great deal of guidance during my term as vice-president. Her help was invaluable and I know I will call upon her often. And of course, my thanks to Tracy Thompson-Przylucki for making sure we are all skating in the right direction with the best skates possible.

  • The Practice of Leadership

Paul's message above talks about the leadership of NELLCO over the last 10+ years. The NELLCO Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and Interest Groups all serve to lead NELLCO, and I'm honored to be entrusted to provide administrative and organizational leadership.

Our organizational work over the last few years has given me more opportunity to focus on leadership as a craft rather than simply a byproduct of my position. A quick glance at the bookshelf to my left reveals Open Leadership by Charlene Li, Creating Leaderful Organizations by Joe Raelin, The Leader Who is Hardly Known by Steven Simpson,  and The Art of Facilitation and The Zen of Groups by Dale Hunter, Anne Bailey and Bill Taylor. I could go on. I subscribe to lists that focus on organizational leadership. I participate in a weekly tweet chat, either haplessly or hilariously tagged #assnchat, in which association leaders sit on their . . . chairs and chat about their leadership innovations, challenges, successes, ideas, etc.

In June I attended a wonderful 4-day Abundance Leadership workshop offered by Organizational Design & Development Associates (ODDA). Abundance Leadership is the practice of leading from a position of bounty, rather than scarcity. Laura Freebairn-Smith, Principal of ODDA and one of the faculty for the workshop, has written her dissertation on the subject. Her research identified behaviors and characteristics of leaders who adopt an abundance approach; one in which resources, ideas, recognition, power, communication, etc., are readily shared in the belief that there is plenty for everyone. Juxtaposed against this are the behaviors and characteristics of scarcity leaders; those who hoard resources, power, etc. out of fear that they risk being depleted.

My participation in the workshop required me to invite feedback from a number of colleagues familiar with my work. They were each asked anonymously to complete a 360 degree evaluation about my leadership. In addition, I completed the Myers-Briggs instrument (I'm an INTJ). All of this material was used to provide me with a comprehensive report that will help me to hone my leadership skills. I came away from the workshop with a clearer sense of my leadership strengths and weaknesses, and a concrete plan of action.

The current state of affairs in the world of law libraries can often lead us to adopt a scarcity mindset. But I think we'll be more successful as a profession embracing abundance. To that end, each month I'll focus on one abundance behavior in this newsletter. My goal will be to provide you with food for thought and the tools to identify different types of leadership behaviors for yourself. We all lead at some point, and mindful leadership is a good goal for all of us.
