Blog of the Month!

A Blog of the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law

Hearsay's mission is simple;  1) to provide news on the library's activities and resources, and 2) to engage the Sturm College of Law community in the evolution of our resources for academic development. But in meeting those objectives, they also provide good content for those of us outside of their main audience.

Of particular interest is a broad collection of research guides. The site is active and current, and contributions come from members of the library staff.

  • NELLCO at AALL - All Aboard!

Welcome to summer! Seems like we just got used to writing 2012 on our checks and suddenly we're halfway through the year. The busyness at NELLCO continues unchecked and I have lots to share with you this month.

End of an Era

First, this summer marks a momentous occasion for NELLCO. We are saying goodbye to the last member of our founding Board of Directors! Judy Gire, Director of the Law Library at the University of New Hampshire School of Law (formerly Franklin Pierce Law Center) retires this year. Judy was in attendance at that first NELLCO meeting in 1983, and she has served NELLCO for 29 years. We are so grateful for her leadership and for her generous spirit of collaboration. At the Spring Board of Directors meeting we honored Judy for her service, and I wrote a little ditty to mark the occasion as well. We wish all the best to Judy!

Board Development

As you may know, NELLCO's Board of Directors is an ex officio body composed of the library directors of NELLCO's 25 Full Member institutions. After a long period of very little change in leadership, we're suddenly seeing lots of fresh new faces. It's exciting to have new energy on tap and it has led us to thinking more about Board engagement and development. One big change we've implemented under Karen Quinn's leadership is the creation of Board Committees. Every member of the Board has at least one committee responsibility. The committees are:

  • Education Committee
  • Executive Committee
  • Finance Committee
  • Governance and Nominating Committee
  • Membership Committee
  • Personnel and Human Resources Committee
  • Planning Committee

At our Spring meeting, hosted by Betsy McKenzie at Suffolk Law School, these committees met for the first time to begin their work, based on committee charges developed by the Executive Committee. I'm looking forward to seeing what kinds of innovations emerge from the efforts of all of these talented leaders!

Six Thinking Hats -

Board development is being addressed in part by the introduction of a new (to us) technique to aid in group and team work. In a recent conversation with one of NELLCO's consultants, Laura Freebairn-Smith of Organizational Design and Development Associates(ODDA), Laura introduced me to de Bono's Six Thinking Hats. This is a problem-solving approach that employs parallel thinking. It's brilliantly simple and a wonderful tool for helping a group explore an issue from multiple perspectives in a clear and organized way. NELLCO Board members have been invited to attend a one-day workshop in July so we can add the six hats to our Board toolkit!

All Aboard!

Finally, you won't want to miss the NELLCO Annual Meet & Greet this year. If you heard about our event last year in Philly and were sorry you missed it, now you get another chance. We'll be sailing on the Spirit of Boston on Sun. July 22 from 6:30 - 9:00 pm. This event is FREE to all members (Full, Affiliate, and International Affiliate). Non-members and guests pay $70.00. Register NOW and don't miss out on the fun! See you in Boston!

Yours In Collaboration,

Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki

Executive Director

symMessage from the ILL Interest Group Chair

Editors Note: Sabrina Holley-Williams provided this message for the newsletter last month. Unfortunately, Sabrina was subsequently laid off and is no longer able to serve as Chair of the ILL Interest Group. I am so sorry to lose Sabrina's leadership and would like to thank her for her efforts on behalf of NELLCO.

"If you haven't updated your profile on the new NELLCO website and connected with the ILL Interest Group, please do so at your earliest convenience. Go to www.nellco.org and either sign in or click on "Haven't registered yet?" Then join the ILL Interest Group.

I'm also asking for your help gathering statistics. I'm looking for lending and borrowing numbers from the previous 3 years, or as much as you can provide. If you are able to divide it by books versus copies/faxes please do. I'd also like to get a sample of the types of titles that are being borrowed. You can provide this information however you'd like. Examples include the 10 most interesting titles you've borrowed or loaned, titles from the past month, or a random sampling. Thanks for your help."

Until the ILL Group has new leadership in place please send the ILL information Sabrina requests to me at tracy.thompson@nellco.org.

June is Audiobook Month!

From the Audio Publishers Association website:

GET CAUGHT LISTENING!

Every June, the APA carries out a campaign to enhance visibility, awareness and popularity for audiobooks by directly reaching out to consumers. In 2011, over 75 authors and narrators teamed up with publishers to reach approximately 7.5 million people through all forms of social media (adding to the nearly 4 million reached in 2010!)

As a participant in our June Is Audiobook Month initiative, we ask that you speak out to your fans in whatever way you'd like - from a quick tweet to a blog to a weekly audiobook mention, the level of participation is up to you!
