Director's Corner |
Countdown to Albany!
If you haven't already registered you've missed the earlybird rates, but the registration fees are still a bargain. In addition to our keynote speaker David Weinberger, all of the Industry Partner Sessions, and Interest Group meetings on day one, an evening event at the NY State Library Museum and Archives, and outstanding educational programs on day two, your fee covers meals and snacks on both days, and chances to win some great prizes! And the weather has been phenomenal in Albany so far this winter. March is on track to be lamb-ish. So, the choice is yours, hear about it later or be a part of it as it happens. Hope to see you here before the next issue of Slice!
We can't make the Symposium a success without you! Please forward this information to anyone who may be interested in attending. The Symposium is open to NELLCO members and to non-member librarians. Register today and plan to join us in Albany!
Yours In Collaboration,
Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki

iSinolaw and Thomson Reuters |
As you may know, iSinolaw was acquired by Thomson Reuters at the end of 2011. iSinolaw will be part of the Westlaw China content and will be accessible via the Westlaw China platform exclusively beginning on Feb. 14.
NELLCO has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with iSinolaw and many members subscribe through the NELLCO license agreement. We have been remaining in close contact with iSinolaw during this transition. We have been assured that for the 2012 subscription year our iSinolaw subscribers would have access to the Westlaw China platform for this content, the terms of the NELLCO agreement would not be affected, and the pricing would be honored.
At this point, we have not yet received renewal invoices from iSinolaw/Thomson, and we have now learned that West is seeking new license agreements, signed by each subscribing library. We have not yet resolved this issue and are unsure what to expect on Feb. 14. We will keep you informed as we work to resolve this, and we ask that you contact us immediately if you lose access, or if you are contacted directly by either West or iSinolaw about this agreement and your terms. |
NELLCO Symposium 2012 - Industry Partners
As of this writing, we have 14 Industry Partners participating in the NELLCO Symposium. They are:
- ALM Legal Intelligence
- Berkeley Electronic Press
- Digital Library Systems Group
- East View Information Services
- EBSCO Publishing
- Fastcase
- Gale/Cengage
- Justis Publishing
- Leadership Directories
- Oxford University Press
- Paratext
- Thomson Reuters
- Wolters Kluwer Law & Business
- YBP Library Services
We are so pleased to have these providers joining us! Attendees will have several opportunities throughout the day to meet with most of these information providers in small classroom settings for product support or thought leadership sessions. Exhibit tables will be set up in the main dining and break area as well, so that attendees will have additional opportunities to visit with our Industry Partners and learn more about their products, their plans, and their NELLCO offers.

February is American Heart Month
February is American Heart Month, and unfortunately, most of us know someone who has had heart disease or stroke. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States; one in every three deaths is from heart disease and stroke, equal to 2,200 deaths per day. These conditions are also leading causes of disability preventing people from working and enjoying family activities. Cardiovascular disease is also very expensive-together heart disease and stroke hospitalizations in 2010 cost the nation more than $444 billion in health care expenses and lost productivity. However, we can fight back against heart disease and stroke. CDC and other parts of the US government have launched Million Hearts™, to prevent the nation's leading killers and empowering everyone to make heart-healthy choices.
Launched in September 2011 by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Million Hearts™ is a national initiative that aims to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes in the U.S. over the next five years. This public-private partnership, co-led by CDC and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is integrating and amplifying a range of existing heart disease and stroke prevention programs, policies, and activities.
