Blog of the Month! | |
| |
Jill Hurst-Wahl |
Billed as "the place for staying up-to-date on issues, topics, lessons learned and events surrounding the creation, management, marketing and preservation of digital assets,"
this active blog is maintained by Jill Hurst-Wahl, MLS, a digitization consultant and owner of Hurst Associates, Ltd. Jill is also a Professor of Practice in Syracuse University's School of Information Studies, and a member of the SLA Board of Directors (2011-2013). Her interests include digitization, digital libraries, copyright, web 2.0 and social media.
The blog is a mix of original and curated content. It also serves as a good current awareness resource for conferences, calls for papers, etc. While the content is really good, the usability of the site has some issues. First, each posting doesn't have a unique URL. Second, you can't search the site. As far as I can tell you can only locate past posts through a label list. So if you find something you like (which you will), make sure you figure out how to get back to it!
Recent blog postings include:
- The Right to Sell a Legal Copy of a Work.
- Reports on maximazing the effectiveness of your online resources.

NELLCO has teamed up with Grant Writing USA to offer these workshops across the US. Host institutions only need to provide space and a local contact person. We do the rest. Interested? Let us know!

Director's Corner | |
Well, THAT was fun! July and Aug. were filled with travel for meetings and conferences, with some vacation time thrown in. In addition to the AALL Annual Meeting, I attended the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) meeting for the second year in a row. Both events were great successes.
Despite the absolute insanity of the schedule (see my blogpost for more on that subject) the AALL Annual Meeting in Philadelphia was a pleasure for us at NELLCO. Theresa McCue was able to speak with many of you in the exhibit hall and preview our coming (but still delayed) new website. She also gave away some beautiful posters to those members who brought us old conference bags to recycle. We collected 30 bags which we plan to reuse at our event next March.
The NELLCO dinner cruise on the Delaware River was a huge success! I had the distinct pleasure of sitting at a table with the Schaffer Grant recipient, Gloria Marcela Orrego Hoyos, a librarian at Bibloteca Max von Buch (pictured below) and faculty member at the Universidad de San Andrés in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Everyone attending will confirm that Gloria was the hit of the evening with her absolutely fabulous Gloria Gaynor rendition. Mike Hughes (Quinnipiac) came in a very close second, while Joe Hinger (St. John's), Raquel Ortiz (Roger Williams), Kathleen Cowan (BEPress) and a handful of others kept the dance floor hopping until the bitter end! We're already planning for our event next July 22nd on the Spirit of Boston. You won't want to miss it!
Please take some time with this month's Slice. This is a double issue so there is a lot of ground covered. Make sure to read about the 2012 NELLCO Symposium, a free webinar on ergonomics, our pending website launch, and much more.
Yours In Collaboration,

First Annual NELLCO Event - March 2012 | |
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
NELLCO will host an inaugural, annual two-day event at the Albany Law School in Albany, NY on March 12-13, 2012. Mark your calendars now and join us for the NELLCO Symposium 2012: Content, Collaboration, Curation and Innovation!
Day one will give you an opportunity to meet with a number of information providers in small group settings throughout the day for 45 or 90 minute sessions to focus on content. If there are any particular vendors you'd like to hear from, please let us know so we'll be sure to invite them. The NELLCO Interest Groups will also have an opportunity to meet on day one to foster collaboration.
Day two of the event will be a full day of content programming, which will focus on the remaining themes of curation and innovation. The content will be based on the results of a survey conducted earlier to determine your needs. Stay tuned for a complete program.
| | Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza |
On the evening of day one you'll be invited to attend a reception at the New York State Museum in Albany. The Museum is housed in the Cultural Education Center, which is also home to the State Library and State Archives. The view above is looking from the Museum and Archives building across the Empire State Plaza. On
the right side of this picture you can see The Egg, Center for the
Performing Arts, an architecturally stunning venue, built over 12 years in the 60s and 70s, that defines the Albany skyline.
More information, including registration, will be available on the NELLCO website later in the year. Please plan to attend and help us make this a successful inaugural event! |
Healthy at Work! Free Ergonomics Webinar |
One outcome from the AALL Annual Meeting is a new discount offer for NELLCO members through Contour Design. Contour offers range of ergonomically correct products, including the RollerMouse. This unique replacement for the traditional mouse allows for typical mouse functionality (and more), but using open hands, resulting in less strain on the hands, fingers and wrists. Contour will extend a 10% discount to NELLCO members! Members can find the discount code and more information through your dashboard on the NELLCO members website.

Contour also offers free webinars on ergonomics in the workplace, led by their in-house ergonomist, Steve Kleven. The first session, offered exclusively for NELLCO members, is scheduled for Tues. Sept. 20 at 12:00pm EST. Please contact NELLCO if you would be interested in attending.

LLNE Meeting - Art Law: Framing the Issues |
Those of you in New England won't want to miss the Fall LLNE meeting, Art Law: Framing the issues. The meeting will be held on Fri. Oct. 21 at the Clark Institute in Williamstown, MA. For complete information and registration please see http://www.lawlib.state.ma.us/llne/. |
New Website update | |
We apologize for the delay in launching our new website. It turns out that we have one authentication application on our current site that isn't easily replicated on our new site. If we were to launch the new site without addressing this issue, subscribers' access to Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP) would be interrupted. We are working with Exceed Digital Systems on an API solution and hope to launch no later than Nov. 1. Thanks for your patience as we work to solve this issue.

The new site, pictured above under construction, offers a much more user friendly and intuitive look and feel. Trials, offers and e-resource subscriptions and renewals will be handled through an e-commerce and shopping cart function to which we've all become accustomed in the online shopping environment. NELLCO members will also gain a great deal of direct interaction and opportunity for collaboration through the site's online community functionality. Facebook and twitter integration are supported, as well as other social networking features, like "online now" notifications so members can connect directly. You're going to see a lot of change, and we hope you will work with us to achieve a new site that serves all of us better and leads to greatly enhanced collaboration! |
