Blog of the Month!

Jill Hurst-Wahl

Jill Hurst-Wahl

Billed as "the place for staying up-to-date on issues, topics, lessons learned and events surrounding the creation, management, marketing and preservation of digital assets,"

this active blog is maintained by Jill Hurst-Wahl, MLS, a digitization consultant and owner of Hurst Associates, Ltd. Jill is also a Professor of Practice in Syracuse University's School of Information Studies, and a member of the SLA Board of Directors (2011-2013). Her interests include digitization, digital libraries, copyright, web 2.0 and social media.

The blog is a mix of original and curated content. It also serves as a good current awareness resource for conferences, calls for papers, etc. While the content is really good, the usability of the site has some issues. First, each posting doesn't have a unique URL. Second, you can't search the site.  As far as I can tell you can only locate past posts through a label list. So if you find something you like (which you will), make sure you figure out how to get back to it!

Recent blog postings include:

  • The Right to Sell a Legal Copy of a Work.
  • Reports on maximazing the effectiveness of your online resources.

NELLCO has teamed up with Grant Writing USA to offer these workshops across the US. Host institutions only need to provide space and a local contact person. We do the rest. Interested? Let us know!

First Annual NELLCO Event - March 2012
Please help us plan by answering this very brief survey!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

NELLCO will host a two-day event at the Albany Law School in Albany, NY on March 12-13, 2012. Mark your calendars and pack your parkas! Despite the likelihood of cold weather, we think you'll

Day one will give you an opportunity to meet with a number information providers in small group settings throughout the day for 40-45 minute sessions. If there are any particular vendors you'd like to hear from, please let us know so we'll be sure to invite them.

Day two of the event will be librarian-focused.  The NELLCO Interest Groups will have an opportunity to meet at scheduled times throughout the day. There will also be a full day of content programming, with the overarching theme of "Content, Curation, Collaboration and Innovation."

On the evening of day one you'll be invited to attend a reception at the New York State Museum in Albany. The Museum is housed in the Cultural Education Center, which is also

Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza
home to the State Library and State Archives. The view to the right is looking from the Museum and Archives building across the Empire State Plaza. On the right side of this picture you can see The Egg, Center for the Performing Arts, an architecturally stunning venue, built over 12 years in the 60s and 70s, that defines the Albany skyline.

More information, including registration, will be available on the NELLCO website later in the year. Please plan to attend and help us make this a successful inaugural event!
NELLCO Website News

As I mentioned last month, we are very excited about the upcoming launch of the new NELLCO website hosted by YourMembership.com. While we had planned on a July 1 launch we've delayed the roll out to finish the data transfer and continue testing. We also want to be sure we can explain how it all works!
  ymsitesnapshot
The new site, pictured above under construction, offers a much more user friendly and intuitive look and feel. Trials, offers and e-resource subscriptions and renewals will be handled through an e-commerce and shopping cart function to which we've all become accustomed in the online shopping environment. NELLCO members will also gain a great deal of direct interaction and opportunity for collaboration through the site's online community functionality. Facebook and twitter integration are supported, as well as other social networking features, like "online now" notifications so members can connect directly. You're going to see a lot of change, and we hope you will work with us to achieve a new site that serves all of us better and leads to greatly enhanced collaboration! Launch is scheduled for July 2011.

July is Sandwich Generation Month!

Is your state one of those recognizing the sandwich generation? Those adults who are raising children and caring for elderly parents at the same time? I'm sure there are many in our profession facing this reality.

 sandwich

According to the Pew Research Center, currently just over 1 of every 8 Americans aged 40 to 60 is both raising a child and caring for a parent, in addition to about 7 million adults caring for their aging parents from a long distance. US Census Bureau statistics indicate that the number of older Americans aged 65 or older will double by the year 2030, to over 70 million.

Free Toolkits are available for download to help you plan events to raise awareness of and provide support to the Sandwich Generation.
The parent organization of Sandwich Generation Month is the Sandwich Generation Resource Group. Funding and administrative support for the Sandwich Generation Month website and presented materials are provided by Griswold Special Care.

(NB: July is also International Blondie and Deborah Harry Month!)
