New Members!
Morris Cohen Remembered
Retention of Print Legal Material
Current Awareness
NELLCO in Philadelphia
I apologize in advance for this lengthy column, but there is just so much to share! I want to begin by welcoming our newest Affiliate Members. Over the last six months we've added Wake Forest University School of Law Professional Center Library, Duquesne University Center for Legal Information (which also serves as the Allegheny County Law Library) and the Maryland State Law Library to our ranks. We are thrilled to serve these new members and look forward to their participation.
Shifting gears a bit, on Sun. May 1 I joined a gathering of friends and colleagues in the Levinson Auditorium at Yale Law School to celebrate the life of Morris Cohen. It was a beautiful sunny day in New Haven and I think everyone in attendance was uplifted by the chance to pay tribute to this colleague and mentor to so many. Listening to all of the speakers that day one message was driven home for me. Morris was, above all, genuine. He will be missed.
Immediately after the memorial service I was off to Chicago for a joint LIPA/NELLCO Summit on Print Repositories.
LIPA and NELLCO are still exploring the possibilities of a collaborative print repository and we wanted to bring together some of the key stakeholders as well as some of the leading thinkers and writers in this area. The Center for Research Libraries generously hosted the 20 participants for a day and a half of exploration and discussion. The participants were:
Carla Caforio - William B. Meyer
Tim Cherubini -Lyrasis
Paul George - Unibversity of Pennsylvania
Susan Goldner - MALLCO
Mark Jacobs - WRLC
Darcy Kirk - University of Connecticut
Margaret Maes - LIPA
Kevin Marmion - William H. Hein
Constance Malpas - OCLC
Lizanne Payne - Consultant to CRL and WEST storage project
Bernie Reilly - CRL
Rita Reusch - University of Utah
Kathleen Richman - LLMC
Mark Sandler - CIC
Roger Schonfeld - Ithaka
Jean Wenger - Cook County Law Library
Amy Wood - CRL
Judith Wright - University of Chicago
Michelle Wu -Georgetown University
As you might imagine from this list, we had some very lively and well-informed discussions which we hope will lead to some decision-making for LIPA and NELLCO before the end of the summer.
Judith Wright, from the University of Chicago, graciously arranged for our group
to take a VIP tour of the not-yet opened Joe and Rika Mansueto Library. According to University of Chicago President Robert J. Zimmer, the library "will use innovative technology to house up to 3.5 million volumes of print material in high-density space, and will provide an important new preservation facility for rare materials and outstanding user space for faculty and students." Our group got a first-hand look at the library and we were simply awestruck! As I told our tour guide, this was a hard group to impress and they had done it easily. This is an incredible building and worth a visit for any library enthusiast.

I also want to remind you that you can visit the NELLCO Weekly Twitter Roundup to stay informed of the latest news being tweeted by NELLCO. This is a great current awareness tool without needing to follow NELLCO on twitter. Just check the Roundup once a week to see everything we tweeted about last week in a newspaper-style format. Of course, if you want to follow us you can do so @nellcoinc!
Finally, we are looking forward to seeing you all soon in Philadelphia. NELLCO will hold our Annual Meet & Greet Event, and will also be available in the Exhibit Hall. Stop by our booth with your questions and comments, or to say hi to Member Support Manager Theresa McCue. And while you cruise the Exhibit Hall don't forget to urge those information vendors to work through NELLCO to save everyone time and money!
Yours In Collaboration,
Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki
