Does your staff need grant skills? As a NELLCO member you can get them for free!

NELLCO member libraries that can host a 2-day grant writing or grant management workshop will receive two free seats for staff to attend. That's a value of almost $1000.00!

NELLCO has teamed up with Grant Writing USA to offer these workshops across the US. Host institutions only need to provide space and a local contact person. We do the rest. Interested? Let us know!

Blog of the Month!

This blog is a mix of info just for the locals (like the heat isn't working, and we're out of earplugs) and some good resource and research tips that many will find useful. Some recent posts include:

It looks like most of Brooklaw's professional library staffers contribute to the blog.

Send Us Your Pictures!

We want to highlight your library and your staff on our website and in our newsletter. Please send in any images you'd like to see, along with a brief description, to tracy.thompson@nellco.org or theresa.mccue@nellco.org. All images should be jpgs of at least 620 pixels wide by 310 tall. We can work with larger images but nothing smaller. Now hit us with your best shots!

First, I want extend my sincere thanks to all of you for your cards, e-mails, calls and kindness on the recent loss of my sister, Beth. Your support has been overwhelming and yet another reminder of the goodness of the people in our profession. Thank you!

Some initial reflections following the focus groups -

Are we Horton or the Whos? or Can you hear me now? (choose the theme that resonates with you)

While the final report is still in the making, and we are still planning one final session via conference call, there are some clear messages that have come through from our recent focus group sessions at AALS. First and foremost is our need to do a better job communicating with all of you about what we already DO offer to our members. It's clear that many of you aren't aware of all of the benefits to which you're entitled as a member. We've heard the message loud and clear (we are here . . we are here. . .we are here!) and are working on several course correcting initiatives.

First, we're adding a new feature to our newsletter called Tips from Theresa. Each month Theresa McCue, NELLCO's Administrative and Member Support Manager, will offer just one tip to help improve our communications with you.

Second, we are planning a new website and member interface which we'll roll out later this year. The new site will offer dramatically enhanced membership enagagement functionality, including facebook and twitter integration and a mobile app. We're finalizing negotiations with a new membership and content management system provider, Your Membership (YM) and look forward to moving from a website to a web-based community of truly engaged and informed members! Stay tuned!

Yours In Collaboration,

Public Law Libraries in Crisis?

Earlier this month I was alerted to the situation facing the Texas State Law Library. In the current round of state budget cuts the proposal on the table in Texas would be essentially "a wholesale slaughter" according to a Jan. webcast alert on Library Journal.com by Michael Kelley.

Kelley's article gives details of the situation in Texas, and also points to similar results brewing in California as Governor Jerry Brown scrambles to shore up that state's sagging economy. In the most recent issue of the AALL Spectrum Jonathan Stock offers some insight on similar straits in Connecticut in his article, Saving Connecticut Judicial Branch Law Libraries: The recent crisis and beyond. All of these stories should serve as a call to action for law librarians. But what can we do?

In a word: advocate!  In Stock's article, he offers several strategies based on the experience in Connecticut. Take a look. You can also stay informed through relevant current awareness channels like the SCCLL list-serv. And hone your advocacy skills. Last year NELLCO partnered with LIPA and LLMC to offer a 4-part series of advocacy webinars. NELLCO members can gain access to all of the materials from those sessions, including the recorded sessions, for free!  Just contact me and let me know you'd like access. Then put your skills to work in your state!

NELLCO Trials

Trials with detailed information are always posted on the NELLCO website! Just login as a member and click on Trials and Offers from the member dashboard.

It's also very helpful to us if you include a comment so we know why you chose or declined to subscribe to a trial resource. This feedback is helpful to us when we negotiate with information providers. Just enter it in the comments field when you make your decision. Thank you!

Feb. is African American History Month!

First celebrated as Negro History Week in 1926, African American History Month was instituted 50 years later, in 1976. Join the Library of Congress in celebrating this year's theme, African Americans and the Civil War.  From the LOC site:

ABOUT THIS YEAR'S THEME

This year's theme. . . honors the efforts of people of African descent to destroy slavery and inaugurate universal freedom in th

e United States. The theme, chosen by the Association for

the Study of African American Life and History urges all Americans to study and reflect on the value of their contribution to the nation.

EXECUTIVE AND LEGISLATIVE DOCUMENTS

The Law Library of Congress has compiled guides to commemorative observations, including a comprehensive inventory of the Public Laws, Presidential Proclamations and congressional resolutions related to African American History Month.
