Thoughts on cooperation, collaboration and making consortia work.

Caution: Shameless self promotion follows!

As you may know, I started Collaborationista in Oct. of 2010. To date I've published 21 posts on a number of topics, including most recently the role of intent in collaboration. I don't plan a regular schedule, but rather expect to post as topics surface during the course of my work. I hope you'll engage in the dialogue, challenge my thinking, and share yours!

We want to highlight your library and your staff on our website and in our newsletter. Please send in any images you'd like to see, along with a brief description, to [email protected] or [email protected]. All images should be jpgs of at least 620 pixels wide by 310 tall. We can work with larger images but nothing smaller. Now hit us with your best shots!

Did you miss it? A personal note.

No, you didn't miss the Jan. issue of slice. We're just running late. I'm sorry to report that Jan. has been a difficult month for my family this year, as we lost my amazing sister, Beth Cortina, to urachal adenocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of bladder cancer. Beth touched many people in her life and work and inspired us all as she battled this illness over the past year. My thanks go out to the many members, friends and colleagues who have kept us in your thoughts throughout this time.

NELLCO at AALS

As I mentioned in the last issue, NELLCO was busy during the AALS Annual Meeting in San Francisco! We hosted a series of five focus groups, each with 4 or 5 participants, to help the Board of Directors guide NELLCO and make sure we're meeting the needs of members. The groups included both full and affiliate members, including one international affiliate! The sessions were hosted in a small suite in a comfortable setting, with David Penniman serving as facilitator for the sessions. We hope to host one more session by phone in the near future.

David's expertise was clearly a crucial factor in the success of the focus groups. He has a vast knowledge of libraries and consortia, and his experience served our process well. Early results indicate that a great deal of insight was elicited through this process and participants really enjoyed the experience.

Focus Group Results

Each session was recorded (with permission) and will be transcribed. From the transcriptions, his notes and observations, David will produce a report for NELLCO with his findings. That report will help us identify areas for further inquiry, possibly through targeted member surveys, and to aid the Board of Directors in decision-making about the future of NELLCO. Please contact me directly if you'd like to add anything to the conversation, even if you weren't able to participate in the focus groups. Stay tuned as we continue this process.

Yours In Collaboration,

Fordham Law School expands in NYC!

In a city where space is more precious than gold, this month Fordham Law School broke ground on a new facility in Lincoln Center which will double the size of Fordham's urban campus! A recent article in New York Lawyer highlights the project, designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, LLP.

According to the article by Noellen G. Walder:

In addition to offering 25 audio-visual equipped classrooms, lecture halls, seminar and conference rooms, the new 349,000-square-foot school will boast a two-story atrium, a moot and trial court facility, and a 562,000-volume law library.

Robert Nissenbaum (chair of NELLCO's Finance Committee and a member of the Board of Directors) is the Director of the Law Library at Fordham and has been instrumental in the planning of the new library space. Robert provides this clarification, "the article is erroneous when it cites the ability to handle a 560,000+ law library. The newly constructed library will have room for about 100,000 volumes and then in an adjacent library closed stack storage facility there will be room for another 550,000 volumes."

Congratulations to Fordham Law School on this monumental undertaking and thanks to Betsy McKenzie for pointing me to the article!

Jan. is National Mentoring Month!

It seems quite fitting that January is a month set aside for honoring mentors, given that we lost Morris Cohen in December. Morris was one of the great mentors to our profession. His impact cannot be overstated, nor can it measured. Take action this month in honor of Morris.

From the NMM website.

10 THINGS TO DO IN JANUARY

1. Become a mentor in your community.

2. Learn more about mentoring.

3. Partner with a mentoring organization.

4. Tell 5 friends about National Mentoring Month.

5. Think about the mentors in your life and post a tribute to them online.

6. Read the latest research and find resources on mentoring.

7. Serve your community on MLK Day of Service by deciding to become a mentor.

8. Make a donation to a mentoring organization in your community.

9. Go to YouTube on Thank Your Mentor Day™ (January 25) and make the National Mentoring Month videos the most popular of the day.

10. Explore ways to help children succeed academically through mentoring.
