New Season, New Members, New Blog, New Functionality

It's official. Autumn has arrived and the days are shorter, the air is crisper, and we're back to oatmeal for breakfast. Farewell to the dog days.

As we finish out the first quarter of our fiscal year we have a lot of exciting news to share. First and foremost we welcome 2 new members! A new International Affiliate Member, the Melbourne Law School Library, headed by Carole Hinchcliff, Law Librarian, is the first Australian law library to join NELLCO! We are thrilled to now boast members in 5 countries! Carole attended AALL this year in Denver and we were delighted to meet her at our table in the exhibit hall.

We also welcome a new Affiliate Member, University of Massachussets School of Law, Dartmouth, headed by Spencer E. Clough, Law Library Director. UMass Law was established in Feb. 2010 and welcomed its first class just this semester! We look forward to serving them from the very beginning and are pleased to help them maximize their resources through collaboration.

Please join me in welcoming these new NELLCO members!

I'm also announcing the launch of Collaborationista, my new blog focused on collaboration and making it work. I hope you'll take a look every once in a while, comment and share. And let me know if there are topics you'd like me to address or if you'd like to serve as a guest blogger on a particular topic. I'd love to hear from you!

Finally, I'd like to point out some new functionality on the NELLCO website. Members can now search for other members by name, interest group, state, etc. and generate a contact list. From that list you can also send an e-mail directly from the NELLCO site. Here's a quick screencast on how to use this feature.
Please contact us if you have any questions, concerns, comments or ideas!

Yours in Collaboration,
Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki, Executive Director
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This month marks the 25th Anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, first celebrated in 1985.

Take time this month to do something in support of breast health: schedule your mammogram; send awareness e-cards to 8 of your friends; talk to the women in your life and make sure they're up-to-date; create an early detection plan; donate; race for the cure; hug your mother, sister, wife, daughter.

This post is in memory of my mom, Margo Nowak, 1939-1992.
Shout Out to University of Alberta Libraries
Last month I shared the creative PR efforts of public libraries in Las Vegas. This month the I'm highlighting the excellent video produced by the University of Alberta Libraries to showcase their expertise, their people, and their services.
NELLCO Board of Directors to Meet in Albany, Oct. 21-22

The NELLCO Board of Directors, pictured here are at our Fall 2008 meeting at Western New England College School of Law in Springfield, MA, is composed of the library directors of our 25 Full Member Libraries. The full Board meets each Spring and Fall, and the Executive Committee meets each Summer and Winter. This month we're welcoming our newest Board member, Helane Davis, Library Director of the Schaffer Law Library here at Albany Law School, home to NELLCO.

The Board commits an incredible amount of time and energy to the consortium. Our meeting this month will span a full day and a half and cover a broad range of topics. Fri. will be devoted entirely to examining NELLCO's long term financial future. Karen Quinn (NELLCO President; RI State Law Library), Robert Nissenbaum (NELLCO Finance Committee Chair; Fordham Law School Library) and I have been working with Organizational Design and Development Associates (ODDA) for the last few months to develop a report that will serve as both a snapshot of our current financial health and a benchmark for us moving forward. The report and the recommendations made by ODDA as a result of their research will help us to set appropriate and mission consistent goals and establish strategies to reach them. Stay tuned for a full report in the November Slice!

NELLCO is a microstaff organization!
Theresa McCue, An Army of One!

When I attended the ASAE Annual Meeting last month I realized for the first time that there is a whole world of resources out there dedicated to the unique needs of small staff associations. Of course, one association's small staff is another association's army. ASAE defines a 'small staff' as 10 or fewer staff members. At NELLCO, we're serving you with just 2! We're a microstaff organization.

Theresa McCue, Administrative and Member Services Support Manager, is the go-to person for all of your NELLCO account and membership questions. She can help you navigate the NELLCO website, answer billing questions, and leap tall buildings in a single bound! Despite her workload serving staff members at 109 law libraries and working with our vendors to insure accurate billing and uninterrupted access, Theresa always comes to work with a smile and approaches every problem as solvable. Thanks Theresa, for making our microstaff consortium work!

What's in your profile?

NELLCO members have you updated your online profile lately? Did you know that we use the information in your profile to send you information about renewals, trials and discounts?  We also use your library profile information to supply vendors with your current IP and contact information. So...if you have not heard from NELLCO in awhile it may mean that your profile information is incorrect or out of date! Please take a moment to update your profile today so you don't miss out on any NELLCO member communications.
