Blog of the Month!

Maintained by Mike Widener, the Rare Books Librarian at Yale Law School, this blog's title is pretty self-explanatory. While posts are sporadic, Widener does an excellent job of making what he does choose to post both engaging and relevant to the collection.  It's exciting to see rare materials emerging from dusty vaults through savvy applications of technology. Kudos Mike and YLL!

Recent posts include links to a video tour of the rare book collection, images from the collection posted on flickr, and a provenance mystery solved!

Be sure to check it out.

If you missed the Swank Digital Campus online demos last week you can still take a look. View the recorded demo at your convenience. Swank offers a great service that librarians can provide to support their faculty!

President's Message

Karen QuinnI would like to introduce myself to all 107 members of NELLCO as I begin the journey as incoming President. I compare this adventure to the start of a summer road trip, which brings to mind the saying, "if you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there." That is certainly not the case with NELLCO, an organization that knows where it is headed, armed with a clear and distinct destination in mind. As aptly stated in the mission statement, NELLCO strives to advance justice through access to global legal information.  Pretty heady stuff!  All 107 members travel this road not in one vehicle, but rather in a motorcade, representing diverse institutions, with distinct missions and disparate resources.  Our GPS is represented by the NELLCO strategic plan and we are guided along the route most competently by our Executive Director Tracy Thompson Przylucki.

Permit me to overdo the analogy -- Our gas tank is full and brimming with ideas, although the road ahead may be a bit rocky and laden with curves.  Through collaboration and innovation, NELLCO hopes to straighten out some of those curves.   NELLCO is actively involved in expanding and promoting creative purchasing alternatives, actualizing the universal search solution, providing member discounts as well as facilitating advocacy in its many manifestations.  With the economic climate on everyone's mind and with service to its members as a primary goal, NELLCO is currently focused on conducting an in depth financial review and analysis. We are working once again with Organizational Design and Development Associates, who guided us through our most recent strategic planning process. Stay tuned as the journey continues.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Quinn

- NELLCO at AALL 2010

With summer winding down and Labor Day fast approaching I hope everyone has enjoyed some vacation time with friends and family. My family and I spent a lovely and relaxing week in Essex, NY on Lake Champlain. We didn't have any Champ sightings but we still believe! My vacation pushed this Aug. newsletter back a week, so Vol. 2 begins with the 3rd Weds. of the month. We'll be back on track in Sept. with Issue no. 2.

Last month's trek to Denver for the AALL Annual Meeting was both productive and enjoyable. Despite the locals' perspective on the weather, I found the dry heat a pleasant change from the oppressive humidity we've been experiencing this summer. And the ease of access to program rooms, the exhibits, the registration area and the hotels was just great.

I had the opportunity to moderate a program about NELLCO's Universal Search Solution. On Sun. afternoon, Judy Gire (Pierce Law Library Director), Roberta Woods (Reference and Instructional Services Librarian at the University of Hawaii) and Dan Rosati (Senior Vice-President, William S. Hein) joined me for program C6 - NELLCO's Universal Search Solution: A Twitterpated Conversation About the Future of Finding

A few other programs really stood out. Program I2 on Tues. morning, AALL, Boycotts and Antitrust: Is There a Nexus? was excellent and thought-provoking and reminded me how stimulating law school was. For this program Darcy Kirk (University of Connecticut Law Library Director and AALL President-elect) invited Professor Hillary Greene to address the issues around group action and when such action might be construed as potential antitrust infractions. Ms. Greene's recent article "Antitrust Censorship of Economic Protest" appeared in the March issue of the Duke Law Journal.

Program J3, The Durham Statement on Open Access One Year Later: Preservation and Authentication of Legal Scholarship, moderated by Margie Maes (Executive Director of the Legal Information Preservation Alliance (LIPA)), brought together some of the authors and supporters of the Durham Statement to report out on the progress of the Statement's call for law schools to cease print publishing and move all journals and law reviews onto stable, open, digital formats. The continuing need for the preservation of print materials during the transition from print to digital (and perhaps beyond) was debated and confirmed in my mind NELLCO's consideration of a shared print collection.

The CS-SIS sponsored a standing room only session on Mon. afternoon entitled "Database Ownership: Myth or Reality." For this session, librarians from the Barco Law Library at the University of Pittsburgh, moderated by Susanna Leers, shared their experience developing an interface for a legal database in an effort to save on annual access fees to digital data owned by their library. Not only was the session excellent and enlightening, the team's ingenious ballad set to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies was phenomenal! Looks like a fun place to work.Interested?

Theresa at AALL 2010
In addition to programs, NELLCO staffed a table in the exhibit hall again this year. Theresa was a constant presence there throughout, and she enjoyed meeting so many of you with whom she corresponds by e-mail and phone. We also enjoyed our Sun. evening Meet & Greet where welcomed members and vendors alike for a relaxed evening. It's always good to put names with faces!

Congratulations to AALL on another successful Annual Meeting.

Yours in Collaboration,
Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki, Executive Director
RDA Toolkit Available Through NELLCO

rdaALA is offering the RDA Toolkit to assist libraries with the transition from AACR2 to RDA. The toolkit is freely available through the end of Aug. NELLCO members can access the toolkit by clinking on the RDA Toolkit icon to the right and enter the username nellco-rda and the password rda. NELLCO will be offering consortial discounts on the RDA Toolkit after the free access period expires. The cost per library will depend on the pricing model we ultimately adopt with ALA, but is based upon a site license fee, which includes a single user, plus additional fees based on the number of additional concurrent users you need for your library. In order to determine the best model for NELLCO I need to determine the level of interest in the RDA Toolkit among our members. If the interest is great enough we could get the cost down to less than $300 per library for a single user. Please let us know if you are interested and indicate how many concurrent users you would need at your library.
NELLCO International Fellows Program Needs Host Libraries
Last month we reported that NELLCO will be reopening the International Fellows Program for 2011-2012. In order for this program to be successful we need member libraries to serve as hosts. This program offers an exceptional professional opportunity to NELLCO member librarians that might otherwise not be available to them. Host libraries gain from the legal information expertise of the Fellow in his or her home juridiction. Former Fellow Melinda Renner, University of New Brunswick Law Library, shares her experience visiting the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in "NELLCO International Fellowship - What a Thrill!"  (2007) 7 Legal Inf. Mgmt. 289. (see abstract)

The details of each Fellowship experience (itinerary, agenda, daily responsibilities, dates of visit, etc.) will be determined between the Director of the Host library and the chosen Fellow. Fellows have an opportunity to study the Host library's organization, infrastructure, and work flow. Fellows will examine the Host library's collections to learn about the core content of the Host country, and will provide insight to the Host library on their collection of legal materials from the visiting country. Fellows will provide to the Host institution a research session on the legal information of their home country. Fellows return to their home library better equipped to evaluate their own collection of materials from the Host jurisdiction.

Each Host library will be responsible for planning and organizing a constructive and valuable two-week agenda for their visiting Fellow. Hosts should also be prepared to help with local arrangements (ground transportation, entertainment options, etc.) and to provide social opportunities for the Fellow during the visit. Hosts should be willing to share their experience through a written report to NELLCO for distribution. Any NELLCO Full Member, Affiliate Member or International Affiliate Member wishing to Host a Fellow please e-mail NELLCO to register as a Host.
