NELLCO Board of Directors Meeting

The NELLCO Board of Directors, composed of the Library Directors of each of our 25 Full Member libraries, meets in the Spring and Fall of each year. Our 2010 Spring Meeting will take place on April 21 and 22 in Portsmouth, NH, immediately preceeding the Spring meeting of the Law Librarians of New England (LLNE). Both meetings are hosted by Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, NH.

Finally spring! With the coming of spring the birds return with their cheerful chatter, and this year we decided to tweet right along with them. Click the link above to follow us.

For those of you with seasons I know this is a welcome one. Even if you've endured a fairly mild winter, as we have here in Albany, there is nothing like the explosion of color, sound and fragrance that announces spring!  I hope you all enjoy it to the fullest extent.

A few months ago I surveyed the members about the vendors you use for library purchases other than information resources. I got some good responses and began making inquiries with those vendors about consortium partnerships. Many of them have responded enthusiastically and the result is a number of additional discount offers for NELLCO member libraries. Thus far we have renewed our agreement with Gaylord Brothers and have new discount agreements with Demco, Highsmith, and Library Advantage. Members can login to the NELLCO website to get further offer details. Additional discounts may be forthcoming. To maximize the benefits of your NELLCO membership, please be sure to take advantage of these money-saving opportunities!

I am also very excited about our partnership with Swank Motion Pictures to stream popular video content into the law school curriculum through Digital Campus! There are lots of wonderful films that lend themselves to learning. Think Erin Brokovich, The Pelican Brief, Amistad,The Green Mile, Dead Man Walking, Milk, North Country, Philadelphia, to name a few. Your faculty members can now take advantage of that medium to bring issues to life for their students.

Digital Campus technology enables faculty to embed questions, notes, discussion points, etc, into the streaming video experience. Students can watch the video at their convenience and respond to faculty members' points as they progress through the movie, making the entire experience more interactive and enlightening than simply passive viewing. Click the image to the left for more information or login to the NELLCO website!

Finally, the offer from the Digital Library Systems Group for discounts on Knowledge Imaging Center installations has been extended. Due to the tremendous response thus far as well as the fact that many fiscal year-end budget cycles end on 6/30, the Knowledge Imaging Center (KIC) walk-up scanning/copying systems offer has been extended to 8/31. The new deadline will give those members who have been considering purchasing this product a chance to see a demonstration of the KIC system in action at AALL.

The KIC system introduces a new level of convenience for library users, enabling on-demand digitization of materials. And for the many institutions with green initiatives this is a purchase that fits perfectly with that mission!

Sincerely,

Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki, Executive Director

Acquisitions and Collection Development Meeting

Worcester Law Library
MAY 10, 2010
Worcester, MA

The NELLCO Acquisitions and Collection Development Interest Group will hold their Annual Meeting on Mon. May 10, from 9:30 to 3:30 pm. The Worcetser Law Library, part of the Massachusetts Trial Court Library System, has generously offered to host us for the day. The agenda is still a work in progress but we will be hearing from YBP about the Blackwell acquisition, Lexis will tell us about a pilot project for access to international content, we'll be talking about e-books, and hearing about a Boston area collaboration effort.

Remember, Interest Groups are open to all NELLCO members. There is no cost for Full Members. The fee for Affiliate Members is $40.00 per person. To RSVP send an e-mail to [email protected].
Advocacy Training Wrap-up

In March, NELLCO, LIPA and LLMC collaborated to offer a four part webinar series on advocacy for librarians. I'd like to thank Margie Maes (LIPA) and Kathleen Richman (LLMC) for their participation and commitment to the project. This was the first in what we hope will become a regular effort for our three organizations to work together for the benefit of our members.

Unfortunately, we had a somewhat disappointing turnout with only 17 registrants (we had planned for 50), but our subsequent evaluations suggest that the small group had a good experience overall.  We need your help to make these continuing education collaborations a success. First and foremost, you need to let us know what topics you'd like us to address. Is there something new on our collective horizon that we all need to bone up on? Is there a skill or competency that we can help with? Is there a new technology that you'd like to explore? We have heard from our members that they want more opportunities for distance learning, especially with travel and conference budgets being slashed. We want to meet that demand. Tell us how.
