- KIC It Up in Your Library
Advocacy
In these economic times of competing interests for scarce resources librarians need to step up as advocates for the needs of their libraries, their institutions, and the profession. NELLCO, LLLMC and LIPA, in conjunction with realChange Partners, have joined together to offer a series of online, interactive sessions to our members to help them hone their advocacy skills. Our joint underwriting of a portion of the cost allows us to offer the entire 4-part series for a fee of only $100.00 per participant for members, or $150.00 for non-members. Sessions will be held on 4 consecutive Mondays at 2:00 pm ET, beginning on Mon. March 15. Registration is now open and will be limited to 50 participants. See more detailed information about each session's content below.
Knowledge Imaging Center (KIC)
The Digital Library Systems Group (DLSG) has extended a limited-time offer to NELLCO member libraries for the purchase of their Knowledge Imaging Center (KIC) walk-up scanning kiosk. Member libraries can save $1,000 to $1,500 dollars per unit. The KIC unit allows libraries patrons to digitize print material on the fly. Digitized content can then be e-mailed, ftp'd, saved to a flash drive, etc. KIC units could replace copiers and serve to support institutional green initiatives.
KIC systems are in place at colleges, universities and museums across the U.S. Libraries are finding them to be versatile tooIs. I contacted Joshua Liebman, Computer Operations Facilitator for the Hofstra University Libraries. They have been very happy with the KIC system there. According to Joshua:
Patrons seem to be REALLY pleased and impressed with what the KIC can do and I've received a lot of positive feedback from all of these groups. They are most impressed with the ability to save in color, size of the scanning bed, the automatic cropping and separating of pages, and the various file formats that the KIC can save in. JPG is primarily used for images to use in PowerPoints or papers (photos, charts, text snippets, etc.). Searchable PDF is used primarily for saving an article, book sections, etc. for research which also allows the ability to copy and paste lines of text into a document, highlighting, searching for words within Acrobat, etc. Students and faculty have also used it for copying notes to distribute. Others like the fact that the system is environmentally "green" when compared with using copy machines, that they can save only the sections they want from documents, etc. We've also had unique uses of the KIC such as a Music Professor scanning sheet music from a journal into a pdf document and then using that with a program on his Mac which interprets the scanned pdf and can actually play the music from that. Our EReserve department has made use of it. It has also come in handy for Special Collections since it can handle large format items and since it scans materials face up there is less chance of damaging collection items. Most recently, they digitized 2 very fragile scrapbooks in one of our Rare Books & Manuscripts Collections to allow for patron research/viewing without additional wear and tear on the original.
The Advocacy Webinar Series and the KIC offer from Digital Library Systems Group are just two of the many benefits your library gains through NELLCO membership. NELLCO is a member-driven organization. Please let us know what other sorts of offers or services you'd like to see us provide!
Sincerely,
Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki, Executive Director |
