  • Baker & Taylor and Blackwell
  • BNA

As you probably know by now, Baker & Taylor has acquired Blackwell Book Services North America. YBP Library Services will be expanding to absorb Blackwell Book Services. NELLCO has longstanding relationships with both of these providers and extends discounts to members for print orders under existing agreements with both YBP and Blackwell. I am working to determine what effect this merger is going to have in the short term with respect to honoring the terms of these agreements. I will also be negotiating a revised single agreement. I will work toward one that synthesizes the most favorable terms from the two contracts. Please review the existing agreements and let me know if there are any issues or concerns that you'd like me to bear in mind during the renegotiation phase.

Most of you are also aware of the longstanding call for BNA to provide libraries with usage statistics for their electronic resources.Since the advent of the BNA Law School Program over 5 years ago law libraries have been trying to acquire usage reports for BNA content. In the last week we have learned a great deal about the progress BNA is making on this front.Last spring BNA hired a third party analytics vendor to develop their usage statistics capabilities. While they do not currently plan to be COUNTER compliant, they expect to provide the same type of information required by COUNTER without formal compliance.

NELLCO has issued a letter on behalf of our members commending BNA for taking these strides and encouraging them to continue to report out so that we can all stay abreast of these developments. Watch this space for future news!

Sincerely,

Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki, Executive Director
