Advocate where you are planted

Happy New Year and Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! 2010 promises to continue to provide challenges and opportunities for our profession. I invite you to resolve to rethink old ideas about the role of libraries and librarians and reenvision our shared future.

The last ten years or more have seen a great deal of focus on change management. That has been a key tool for libraries' successes in navigating the changing information landscape. But now we should shift our focus from managing change to leading change. Leadership is one of the core components of AALL's Strategic Plan. One outcome of that plan was the implementation of a survey to answer the question "What are the characteristics of an effective leader in our profession?" You can read the report on the survey results, Define Leader: The Definition and Development of Law Librarians as Leaders, written by Dr. Barbara L. Mackoff, in Law Library Journal (Vol. 101, issue no. 4). What I find particularly troubling is this from page 10 of the report: "the data analysis revealed less of a consensus about the nature of library leadership and more of an agreement on the deterrents to leadership." It's up to us to change that.

So what can we do when, as a profession, we perceive obstacles and barriers to our own roles as leaders? I would suggest that the change needs to come from us. We need to recognize opportunities for leadership, groom ourselves for them, and then step into the breach when leadership presents itself. This leads to another focus of AALL's plan: advocacy. Library professionals at every level can serve as advocates. Every one of us has opportunities in our work lives to advocate for libraries and the information profession.

In an effort to help NELLCO members hone their advocacy skills, NELLCO has teamed up with the Legal Information Preservation Alliance (LIPA) and Law Library Microform Consortium (LLMC) to offer a 4-part Advocacy Skills Workshop Webinar Series this winter. See the article below for more information about this exciting collaboration and speak to your library director if you are interested in attending. The workshop series will be limited to 50 participants.

LIPA, LLMC and NELLCO hope to offer other continuing education opportunities to our members. If you have ideas or suggestions for future joint efforts please let us know!

Sincerely,

Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki, Executive Director

We are experiencing technical difficulties!

Our new location is wonderful but we haven't quite mastered our technology yet. We are working diligently to establish our network and hope to have everything back in order soon. In the meantime, while we are receiving your e-mail, our ability to send e-mail, scan, fax, etc. is unpredictable at best. Please bear with us! We hope to have everything resolved within the next few weeks. We appreciate your patience.
advAdvocacy Skills Workshop Webinar Series

NELLCO, LLLMC and LIPA, in conjunction with realChange Partners, have joined together to offer this series of online, interactive sessions to our members. Our joint underwriting of a portion of the cost allows us to offer the entire 4-part series for a fee of only $100.00 per participant. Sessions will be held on Mondays at 2:00 pm ET in Feb. and Mar. (final dates TBA). In order to encourage discussion and engagement by participants over the course of the series, registration will be limited to 50 participants. Our goal is to encourage participation by decision-makers and adopt a train-the-trainer approach. If you are interested in participating please contact your library director after Jan. 20 to discuss.

The sessions will be led by Libby Post, President of Communication Services in Albany, NY. Communication Services offers a diverse range of services specifically designed to help libraries communicate their messages effectively and ensure long-term success.

Session 1 - The Power Is Already Yours: How branding your library can help you get a seat at the table.
This webinar will introduce the four part series with a look at how branding and marketing can enable you to be a more effective advocate for your library within your institution. We'll talk about positioning your library as an essential service for the various audiences you serve and how their commitment to the library will help you get a seat at the table when resources are being discussed and decided upon.

Session 2 - Advocacy: What Is It and How To Plan It
This webinar will review what advocacy is and how you can use it to your advantage. We'll also talk about how to plan your advocacy work, how to develop an effective message and how you can maximize your advocacy for the long-term in order to continue positioning your library as an essential service that deserves the resources you need.

Session 3 - Power Mapping: How to identify stakeholders and engage them in your advocacy work
This webinar will enable you to identify the people within your institution that you need on your side in order to be successful in your advocacy efforts. We'll focus on Power Mapping tools, developing specific messages for specific audiences, and the persuasive techniques you can use to build your base of support within your institution.

Session 4 - Face to Face: Making Your Case
This webinar will focus on positioning law librarians as leaders in their institutions, the power of personal persuasion and making effective presentations. We'll start with that all important 30-second elevator speech and delve into effective techniques for one-to-one meetings, speeches, PowerPoint presentations and other ways you'll be taking your message to the folks who need to hear it.
2-Day Grantwriting Workshop
Is your library looking for funding sources for a special project or initiative? Has the economy cut into your acquisitions budget at the same time your users need more access to information and additional services? Maybe grant funding is a solution. On March 18-19, 2010 NELLCO will be hosting a grantwriting workshop at Albany Law School offered by Grantwriting USA. For more information or to register click here.
