Director's Corner
Reference Interest Group Annual Meeting scheduled for Dec. 4, 2009 at Western New England College School of Law
Earlier this year the NELLCO Board of Directors voted to open participation in Interest Groups to our Affiliate Members for a nominal fee of $40.00 per person per meeting to cover the cost of materials and food. We know that collaboration benefits from expanding the pool of thoughtful minds in the process and we look forward to increased participation by ALL members in the coming years!
On Fri. Dec 4, from 9:30am-3:30pm the Reference Interest Group will gather in Springfield, MA. Barbara West and the staff of WNECSL have generously offered host us and we have an exciting agenda planned. We will be welcoming Mike Eyler, from Swank Motion Pictures, who will be showing Swank's Digital Campus streaming video capabilities with some very cutting edge tools to enhance the use of movies as teaching tools. We'll also be hearing from Greg Tananbaum about Anianet, a new social networking site devoted to connecting Chinese scholars with the western world of academia. We'll be discussing the use of wikis and web 2.0 (and 3.0?) technologies in the provision of reference service. And this is just a sampling of what's on our plate. If this sounds interesting and you'd like to attend please RSVP as soon as possible to tracy.thompson@nellco.org. If you need overnight accommodations, the Springfield Marriott is located right off of I-91 in downtown Springfield. The discount rate at the Marriott is $98 (+ 12.45% tax), and reservations can be made simply by calling Marriott's main reservation number at (800) 228-9290. Please remember to mention Western New England College to ensure the lower rate. When calling Marriott reservations please make sure to let them know that the college does not have a block of rooms set aside, but that these are individual reservations that are being offered at Western New England College's discounted rate. The attached parking garage offers 24-hour security, and is $14 per day.
Here's more information from the Interest Group Guidelines:
What is a NELLCO Interest Group (IG)? An IG is a self-selected group of library staff members interested in a particular area of expertise within the library. Examples include Reference, Interlibrary Loan and Acquisitions and Collection Development.
What do IGs do? Interest Groups offer members the opportunity to network with colleagues, present programs and demo products, share insights and ideas, problem solve, solicit advice, share projects and successes, and explore new initiatives. IGs are crucial to the life of NELLCO and serve as the springboards for the work and direction of the consortium.
Who can belong to an IG? Any staff member from a Full Member NELLCO library may opt to join any IG, regardless of their position within the library. You may join any IG in which you have an interest. You may belong to as many IGs as you wish.
How can I join an existing IG? Members self-select their IG membership in their NELLCO profile. Simply login to the NELLCO site at http://www.nellco.org with your NELLCO password (no password? Click on 'want to register?'), click on 'My Profile,' and tick the IGs in which you're interested. You will automatically be added to the e-mail lists for those groups.
How can I start a new IG? Have an idea for an Interest Group? Is there a need that isn't being met by existing groups? E-mail the Executive Director (director@nellco.org) and we'll open a dialogue.
What resources are available to IGs? Interest Groups have separate budget lines to fund their annual meetings. IGs may also avail themselves of NELLCO's conference calling service and webinar tool to hold distance meetings, sessions, training opportunities, presentations, etc.
Sincerely,
Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki, Executive Director |

Local Collaboration Efforts |

Recently there has been growing interest among NELLCO members in the idea of local and regional collaborations aimed at sharing physical resources. I have heard interest expressed in Boston, Chicago and Texas. Of course, this makes perfect sense and the time is now to be thinking of creative relationships to maximize budgets and yet expand, rather than reduce, access to content. Have you been thinking along these lines in your area? What are your ideas? What models have you been considering? Even if it's pie-in-the-sky thinkng we'd like to hear it. Please tell us about your programs, projects or just ideas in the area of local/regional sharing of materials. E-mail tracy.thompson@nellco.org.

NELLCO's Universal Search Solution |
|
NELLCO has been awarded an additional year for continuing development of the Universal Search Solution! Our goals for this additional timeframe are to focus on working with the individual information vendors to continue to harvest metadata for the USS. Our aim is to make as much content as possible discoverable through the USS before we move from a beta stage to a production stage.
The importance of the USS and web-scale discovery was driven home last week during a presentation a the Charleston Conference by Jane Burke, of Serials Solutions. Her presentation, Discovery versus Disintermediation, stressed that this approach to discovery is on the bleeding edge. She highlighted a number of products being brought to market to meet this need.
When the USS moves into a production phase it will be made available to ALL NELLCO members. The cost of maintaining the USS, currently borne by NELLCO and the IMLS grant funding, will eventually be shared by all participating member libraries and should be quite minimal when compared to the cost of commercial products. Stay tuned as we continue to enhance this discovery tool! | |
