Director's Corner
If you've seen one consortium, you've seen one consortium!
Welcome back! I hope you are finding Slice to be a useful means of keeping up-to-date about what's happening in your consortium. Please be in touch if you have any suggestions for content. Our goal is to provide information that you want.
The quote above was the title of a session at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Consortium Leadership (ACL) that speaks volumes about the nature of consortia. We're sort of like that song from the Patty Duke show; " identical cousins. . . different as night and day." Your institution may belong to multiple consortia, and in this economy you may be thinking of scaling back your participation in consortia as a cost-saving mechanism. I would urge you to consider a different approach. Decide instead to maximize your return on collaboration. Here's how.
First, before making any decisions you should look carefully at what each of your consortium memberships provides. Once you know the products and services offered, you then need to determine whether your institution is exploiting your memberships. You may find that you're able to save more by maximizing your current consortium relationships than by withdrawing altogether.
Second, look at the mission statements of your consortia. Think about ways you might be able to reach your own goals through the consortium. Contact your consortia and let them know how they could better serve you within the confines of their mission. Chances are your needs are similar to other members of the consortia and your ideas will resonate with others.
Third, let consortium leaders know if you think some services have lived their useful life. Often programs continue because they've gained a life of their own, not because their is organizational will. Programs and services that are no longer valuable to the members consume resources that could be better spent elsewhere.
The bottom line is, be an active and vocal participant in your consortia. We are here to serve you!
Sincerely,
Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki, Executive Director

Visit to Chicago-Kent College of Law |
|

I'd like to thank Keith Ann Stiverson for hosting a NELLCO gathering at Chicago-Kent College of Law last week. We took advantage of my being in Chicago for the ACL meeting to convene a group of Chicago-area Law Librarians (both NELLCO members and non-members) to talk about collaboration. It was a real pleasure and a great opportunity for me to give an overview of NELLCO and for all of us to share ideas. Attendees were:
- Chicago-Kent
JoAnn Hounshell, Director of Bibliographic Services Keith Ann Stiverson, Director of the Library Marcia Magee, GSLIS student (independent study)
- DePaul University
Denise Glynn, Catalog Librarian
- John Marshall
June Liebert, Director of the Library Gwen Gregory, Associate Director for Access and Organization
- Loyola University
Julia Wentz, Director of the Library Fred LeBaron, Head of Faculty Services & Collection Development
- Northwestern University
Eric Parker, Acquisitions Librarian Eloise Vondruska, Associate Director
- University of Chicago
Judith Wright, Associate Dean for Library & Information Services Lyonette Louis-Jacques, Foreign & International Law Librarian
One specific need that emerged is the idea of alternative business models for access to legal information resources as a means to manage budget cuts. The models include pay-per-use access (with caps to allow for budget planning), shorter term subscriptions, and unbundling of content. I will pursue these models in future negotiations with information providers. They may not be options that all vendors can offer, but it's important for them to hear that you, the consumers, have a need for alternatives. If your library would be interested in these models, please make sure the vendors are also hearing from you! |

NELLCO's Mission |

NELLCO, an international consortium of law libraries, advances justice through access to global legal information. Together NELLCO libraries collaborate to maximize resources and to support the missions of their institutions. NELLCO members share the risks and rewards of implementing innovative ideas, and capitalize on enduring successes.
