Welcome to NELLCO's E-Newsletter!

It gives me great pleasure to unveil the first issue of NELLCO's e-mail newsletter, Slice. Each month we'll deliver direct to your inbox the latest news and updates about projects, programs and other activities at NELLCO.  Since its inception in 1983 as a regional consortium in New England, NELLCO has grown to include member libraries across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. Over the past year I have had the opportunity to hear from many of our Affiliate Members and I've learned that they want to feel more connected to the work and life of NELLCO. We hope Slice will be an important vehicle for filling the information gap for all of our members!

Sincerely,

Tracy L. Thompson-Przylucki, Executive Director
NELLCO Adopts New Mission Statement
As part of our strategic planning process the NELLCO Board of Directors developed a new mission statement more in keeping with our current direction and goals. The mission was adopted at the Spring 2009 Board of Directors meeting held at Quinnipiac University School of Law.

NELLCO, an international consortium of law libraries, advances justice through access to global legal information. Together NELLCO libraries collaborate to maximize resources and to support the missions of their institutions. NELLCO members share the risks and rewards of implementing innovative ideas, and capitalize on enduring successes.

NELLCO Founders' Fund for Future Law Librarians

This month NELLCO is pleased to announce the launch of a scholarship fund for aspiring law librarians. At the Spring Board of Directors meeting held at Quinnipiac University School of Law in Hamden, CT, the Board agreed that the state of the economy warranted a more thoughtful approach to our expenditures. Rather than spending our marketing budget on giveaways at the Annual Meeting we're going to channel those funds into educational support for students entering the field of law librarianship. When you stop by our table at AALL (see below) you can drop your card (or the coupon in the first issue of the Capital Crier) into our fishbowl and watch the Fund grow. For every card or coupon we receive NELLCO will add $2.00 to the Fund. In addition, we welcome any additonal donations you might wish to make (tax-deductible, of course!) We plan to issue the first awards for the 2010-2011 academic year through a competitive process. Watch this space for details!

For the second year in a row NELLCO will have a presence in the exhibit hall at the Annual Meeting. You can find us at Table #1217. Stop by and ask us about the USS Project, funded in part by a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Drop your business card in our fish bowl and help us build our Founders' Fund for Future Law Librarians (see above).

Come join the fun at the Annual Meet & Greet!

The NELLCO Annual Meet & Greet will be held on Sun. July 26, from 6:00-8:30 pm at Buffalo Billiards, located at 1330 19th St. NW. This year we will hold a brief members meeting from 6:00-6:30 to provide an opportunity to answer your questions about NELLCO. Come learn more about YOUR consortium and maximize the benefits of membership!
NELLCO Responds to Economy
No Dues Increase in 2010!

Libraries today are facing some harsh economic realities. In order to respond to the fiscal concerns of member libraries NELLCO will hold membership rates in check for the fiscal year beginning 7/1/2009. Members in all categories, Full, Affiliate and International Affiliate, will see no dues increase for FY 2010.

In addition, NELLCO is offering a 10% discount on dues for new members.

Make the most of consortium membership in 2009-2010 and realize further savings for your library through collaboration!

What's in your profile?

NELLCO members have you updated your online profile lately? Did you know that we use the information in your profile to send you information about renewals, trials and discounts?  We also use your library profile information to supply vendors with your current IP and contact information. So...if you have not heard from NELLCO in awhile it may mean that your profile information is incorrect or out of date!  Please take a moment to update your profile today so you don't miss out on any NELLCO member communications.
Affiliates Invited to Participate in Interest Groups
During NELLCO's most recent strategic planning process the Board of Directors worked very diligently to examine the current state of NELLCO. Part of that work resulted in the realization that our Interest Group meetings would benefit from the increased participation of our Affiliate Members. However, Interest Group participation has historically been an exclusive benefit of Full Members. The differential in annual dues paid by Full Members underwrites the expense of those meetings. So our goal was to include Affiliates without diluting the benefit to Full Members. To achieve that goal we are implementing a fee structure to cover the costs of meeting participation by Affiliates.

Affiliate members will be welcome to attend the meeting of any NELLCO Interest Group for a cost of $40.00 per person. This fee will cover the cost of food and materials. Those attending the meeting assume their costs of travel and accommodations.

Notices about upcoming meetings will be distributed via e-mail.
Acquisitions and Collection Development Interest Group

acqThe NELLCO Acquisitions and Collection Development Special Interest Group is made up of law librarians who are responsible for the selection and purchase of library resources.  Michelle Pearse, Harvard, and Merle Slyhoff, University of Pennsylvania, are serving as the group's first co-chairs.

The SIG held its annual meeting on April 3, at Fordham Law School.  Prior to the meeting Tracy Thompson-Przylucki asked the co-chairs to draft a charter and propose a structure for the group, with the goal being to present the documents to the NELLCO Board for formal adoption.   The Board accepted the Charter and structure at its meeting.  The Charter can be viewed on the SIG's website at http://www.nellco.org/_data/global/images/Interest%20Grp%20Charter.pdf.

The ACD SIG is investigating options available for collection analysis, including OCLC's WorldCat Collection Analysis (WCCA) and Library Dynamics.  The purpose is to determine if there is a way to collaboratively compare member collections.  There was a presentation on the use of WCCA by a non-law consortium.

NELLCO trials were discussed, in relation to sharing opinions, concerns, and decisions.  Rather than work in a vacuum, not knowing what our colleagues think about the products and services being reviewed, we agreed to create a blog to discuss issues related to NELLCO trials, including library evaluations and decisions.

A discussion as held on how we can better utilize the expertise of NELLCO members - expertise of both the librarians and within our collections - and how we can make the ACD web page more vital to our work.  Among the topics discussed for inclusion on the ACD web page were:

- Sharing of collection strengths - send information to Elisabeth Umpleby (elisabeth.umpleby@law.uconn.edu)

- Titles being considered for cancellation to make sure there is a copy available in at least one member library

- Titles cancelled

- Links to member library new acquisitions pages, and unique collection development resources

The SIG also discussed the need to better utilize the listserv that exists specifically for the ACD.  The email address for the list is NELLCOACQCD@nellco.org.  ACD members are encouraged to post questions and issues to this list to initiate discussion.
Associate Directors Interest Group

adOn June 12, 2009, the NELLCO Associate Directors Interest Group was officially formed at the 3rd annual gathering hosted this year at Boston University.  The NELLCO Associate Directors Interest Group was formed to provide a forum for associate directors or their functional equivalents from full member NELLCO libraries.  We gather together to share best practices and privately discuss common issues and concerns.

Tracy updated us all on the newest happenings in NELLCO including a review of the NELLCO 5-Year Strategic Plan 2010-2014, a report from Tracy on her recent sojourn to China to attend the China-U.S. Conference on Legal Information & Law Libraries, a quick update of progress with the Universal Search Solution and some introductory discussion on collection projects including collaborative collection development for media and a possible rebirth of the discussion on collaborative collection development for print.

Sue Drisko Zago volunteered to be the point person for the group.  If you should have any questions about this group please feel free to contact her at s.zago@neu.edu.
