Happy New Year,
As we find ourselves almost a month into the new year our family at SWS Mountain Guides would like to take a second and thank all the youth leaders throughout the country for their hard work and dedication. Part of our new year's resolution is to make a better effort to reach out and work with the youth programs nationwide. As we believe the future of our great wildernesses and mountain ranges will be decided by the leaders and advocates that we are creating today.
If you are recieving this email it is because you or someone you know has identified you as a youth leader. It is our hope that this newletter can help promote some of the programs that we work with and create ideas for others. Much like our friends at BAWT our goal is to get more kids and young adults outside and exploring the wilderness that is availble. Whether that be just by communicating and idea or creating a fundraising program for your orgainization we hope that you take a minute and look at what is going on at SWS.
Sincerely,
Timothy Keating, CEO, Co-Director

JH Ranch Comes back to Ascend Mt. Shasta for 12th straight year!

For a high school kid from the east coast the idea of climbing a snow and ice covered mountain in the middle of summer may seem like a foriegn world. Braving freezing temps, windy nights and high mountain slopes can seem a formidable challenge inorder to obtain the prestine summit of one of North America's most prominate peaks. But for about a hundred 15 and 16 year olds this crazy idea will become a reality very soon.
JH Ranch, a christian ministries camp in N. California, runs the renouned Trac 2 program for high school upperclassmen from all across the US. This year, like years past, students will come to attend a two week program that teaches them to apply truths of their faith through adventurous challenges and settings. These students will be challenged to higher levels of leadership not only for themselves but also younger students at the camp. At the end of the two weeks these young christian teens will put what they have learned into action by either traveling on a 109 mile bike journey to the PAcific Ocean or climbing the 14,162ft Mt Shasta.
Under the close eye of professional guides Trac 2 members learn the nessecary crampon, ice axe, and rope travel skills to ascend over 7,000ft from the trailhead towards the summit. The journey to the summit is always a physical and mental challenge even for the most experienced climber but it is how climbers respond that help them learn more about themselves. In the end, for these students, it will be just as much the journey as the destination that defines the true adventure. To find out more about the Trac 2 program check out the website www.jhranch.com

Congrats to Boy Scout Venture Crew 491
Last summer we made a "Shout Out" to BSA Venture Crew 491 for their hard work and dedication summiting Mt. Shasta. Now word is that their efforts will be rewarded again as Boys Life Magazine has said they are publishing a story about Crew 491's three day journey up the Shasta's famed Avalanche Gulch.
Members of the crew fought hard for a summit attempt with the help of three SWS Guides. ( including Troop 599 Eagle Scout turned mountain guide "JB" Brown) To learn more about the climb and see some amazing photography keep your eye out for Boys Life Magazine this summer. |
| Oakland Military Academy Takes On New Heights
"Rappelling Tower Training Outing"
In the SWS tradition of partnership with groups such as Scouts, fundraising organizations, and church groups SWS Mtn. Guides hosted the third annual outing with Oakland Military Academy. Past events have included introductory rock climbing at Mt. Diablo State Park and repelling on natural terrain. For October 2010 the event had even more edge. Beginning in the predawn over 100 Cadets honed their repelling skills in an urban warfare training facility at Camp San Luis Obispo under the guidance of SWS Instructors and the staccato of automatic rifle fire. Rappels varied from the traditional wall to overhung routes and rappels with options to swing over or into windows. After a brief lunch festivities resumed for another couple of hours. Around two things rapped up with SWS Guides coiling ropes and Cadets marching to their Spartan accommodations two miles distant.
SWS would like to thank the Cadets and Faculty of Oakland Academy and wish them success in the coming semester. Also, early congratulations are in order to the class of 2011. We wish you all the best in your coming endeavors. To the rest of the student body see you next year. |
