Avalanche Safety!

bigavalanche
Know before you go!
Winter is finally upon us and soon it will be time to do some backcountry skiing and snowshoeing. Before you strap on your snow cruising device of choice, however, it is imperative that you get your "Avalanche Eyeballs" screwed on tight. Avalanches account for 40-50 fatalities a year in North America. The 2008-2009 winter season was approximately 31 fatalities with 3 of those being in bounds at ski resorts!! Needless to say getting some basic training/education about avalanche safety is very important before traveling during the winter in the backcountry or front country for that matter. There are many ways to get educated about avalanches such as reading books and periodicals, traveling with a friend who is experienced in such matters, but by far the best way to learn the basics is to attend some type of avalanche course/clinic/seminar taught by a avalanche professional . These can range from a free evening lecture on avalanche awareness and a daylong transceiver clinic (conducted by the Mt. Shasta Forest Service info at:
www.shastaavalanche.org  to a 3 day, comprehensive Avalanche I certification course. To find out more about what is available some good places to start would be the ski area you ski at, your local outdoor store, and of course the Internet.

reviews of all avalanche beacons:

santaWhy I think Santa Claus should be an Ice Climber
by Dave Cressman

Is good ole Saint Nick an ice climber? Well if not, he should be! Why you ask? Good question and here is the answer. For one thing it would surely help him climmev on those really steep and and ice covered roofs not to mention those really really tall chimneys he is sure to encounter. Another great benefit he would derive from ice climbing would be all the great practice he would get handling the rope with gloves on. This is surely going help him when it comes time for rigging the reindeer and the sleigh or is that the job of the rigging elves?? An extra benefit Santa would receive from all his time on the ice would be getting himself used to the shorter days and longer nights that we have as we get closer to the Big Day. Couple this with all the time exposed to the cold would greatly benefit the big man when it comes time to hop in the sleigh with all those presents for the long sleigh ride Christmas Eve. This is why I think Santa Claus should be an ice climber if he secretly isn't already!!
