Joshua Tree National Park: A fantastic winter rock climbing playground !
Climbing in Joshua Tree Joshua Tree National Park is a very special place. While it is way to hot to climb there during the Summer months, the best time to climb is late Fall through early Spring. There is something for everyone here, from amazing multi pitch traditional climbs to very sporty single pitch bolted routes. The hiking is also just as great, which makes a trip to Joshua Tree National Park something the whole family can enjoy. Many of the campsites are situated right next to the climbs, which makes for super easy approaches!! The climbing itself ranges from superb cracks to very technical face climbing. The rock at Joshua Tree is incredibly rough which makes for great friction for your feet, but can really wreak havoc on ones finger tips!! Overall Joshua Tree is an amazing place to has something to offer to everyone from non-climbers to advanced crack masters.

| Winter Mountaineering "A Tough Sport"
by Ken Rose Mountaineering is among the worlds toughest sports. It requires excellent physical conditioning, technical skills, and the ability to cope with extremes of weather and hazardous terrain. This is doubly so in the case of winter mountaineering. Days are short; nights are long and cold; visibility can be reduced to zero; avalanche hazards increase. On the other hand, winter affords us quiet solitude and breathtaking scenery. Watching the morning sun glistening across untouched snow slopes and reflecting in the ice can make it all worthwhile...if you are properly prepared. If you've done some summer climbing, then you probably have most of the skills required to attempt a winter climb. However, there are some additional skills and equipment that you'll need to stay safe, and we'll cover the basics here. We'll address the preparations you should make before the climb, as well as some things to do during the climb that will not only help ensure your safety, but will also help you enjoy the unique adventure of winter mountaineering.
Preparing for Your Winter Climb First, if you're going anywhere near avalanche terrain, you must receive avalanche training. Conditions change rapidly at altitude, and avalanche training can help you learn to avoid hazardous terrain and conditions. You will also learn what to do in the event of an avalanche, both for yourself, and your climbing partners. Just as important, you'll get instruction and hands-on practice using some specialized equipment, namely avalanche probes, beacons, and shovels. These are tools that aren't always needed on a summer climb, but can save your life in the winter. Consider them mandatory, and demand that every member of your team become expert in their use. Get professional instruction and practice often...before you set out on a summit attempt.
