Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.

PAIN MANAGEMENT

WE TREAT THE DEPENDENCE AND THEN THE PAIN

Introducing our New Pain Management Track. We understand what you're going through and are here to help you. A dependency on prescription medication has become common in this country. It is estimated that today more than 4.7 million Americans are dependent on prescription medications. Whether it is a result of a physical injury caused by an accident, surgery, anxiety, or chronic pain caused by cancer or another disease, people from every walk of life are struggling with this problem. This is a problem that does not have any external signs. It is not something that is easily identified just by a looking at a person, and can affect anyone, anywhere; but we can help.

Michael Jackson's Physician II

Michael Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, will be back in court in Los Angeles in April. The prosecution hopes that appearance will illustrate that Murray's "gross negligence" contributed to Jackson's death in June of 2009. Murray pleaded not guilty on Monday to a charge of involuntary manslaughter. He was released on $75,000 bail. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz ordered Murray to surrender his passport. The prosecutor feared Murray might flee to his native Grenada or to Trinidad, where has a child.

Murray is accused of administering a fatal dose of propofol to Jackson to help the singer sleep. If Murray is convicted, he could receive up to four years in prison. The judge restricted Murray's practice of medicine, forbidding him from using any anesthetic, specifically propofol. Murray has a cardiology practice in Houston, Texas.

"I don't want you sedating people," said Judge Schwartz.

A representative from the California attorney general's office said that the California Medical Board would be filing a motion to revoke Murray's medical license in California while he awaits his trial.

 A Word from Dr. Baker

Understanding addiction is difficult. Spouses often do not understand why their loved one continues to use despite an extensive history of horrific arguments, broken promises and tear-stained eyes. Children wonder why their Mom or Dad no longer read them bedtime stories and often forget to pick them up from school on time. Employers cannot comprehend why their valued employee showed up to work high again, after just being warned he was to be fired if he did not change his ways. The doctor stares in amazement when the patient refuses to put down the bottle after being told another drink and he would inevitably die. The judge shakes his head in disbelief when ordering a young man to jail for his fourth DUI. Why would any person continue to use or drink after so many dreadful consequences? The truth of the matter is, that addicts and alcoholics alike often do not know why they cannot stop despite the pain and misery their use inflicts. That is the power of addiction. The AA Big Book describes addiction as "cunning, baffling and powerful." Vowing to quit on one's own usually ends in defeat. Most need help to stop.

TGIF

Greetings

Recently, I was listening to a Josh Groban song that exhorts the listener, "Don't give up on yourself for you are loved." Indeed, such truth needs to be repeated over and over again since we are daily dragged into the office of our heads where the negative self-talk tells us we are unloved for so many reasons.

On the spiritual journey we need to cross over and free our heads of the 45,000 negative, unhealthy, unproductive thoughts causing us loneliness and other toxic emotions. We need to practice spiritual exercises, like prayer and mediation, to help us renew our efforts at heightening consciousness of the ultimate Truth, which sets us free namely, God is love and whoever lives in love lives in God and God lives in him. Hence whether or not we feel affirmed and loved by any other person; we must never forget we are loved unconditionally by the Lover of humanity who fashioned us in his beautiful, divine image.

Albert Einstein once said, "Each human being is a part of a whole - we call universe limited in time and space. He experiences self, thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace the whole of nature in its beauty."

Since we come from Love and are grounded in Love, then we are called to free ourselves from the prison in our minds and to see nature in its pristine beauty. We can best do this by being teachers of love and widening our compassionate outreach to others. We can wake from the delusion of separateness to the reality of solidarity. We must never give up on ourselves and retrieve the memory of God dwelling in us as Love. Once we embrace Love, we can move past the intellectualization of our heads as 'apart' to the spiritual mindfulness of our hearts as members of the household of God. Then our perception of separateness and un-love will change to communion and love.

So This TGIF weekend, don't give up on yourself for Mystery-Presence never gives up on you. Open your heart and raise your consciousness of being loved by Love,  then love as you have been loved through compassionate caring for others of the same household to which you belong - God's.

This past weekend The Treatment Center celebrated its first birthday. To mark this occasion, we had a huge party with food, live music and games. The party was really very nice, but what I really enjoyed was seeing our alumni come back to celebrate with us. Our very first patient was here not only for us, but also to mark his one year of sobriety and get his one year coin. That is the most rewarding part of my job, seeing the people I helped to get in here, months down the road. They have just come so far it's unbelievable, people come here at the very end of their road, for many, sobriety is their last option before death. To see people at that party and how far they have come in a few short months is the reason I get up in the morning and come to work. This is just further proof to me that it is never too late, no matter have far you have fallen; we are here to help get you back on the right track.

The Importance of Having Goals

How often do we hear of someone retiring after forty years and dropping dead within a few short months? Once we lose sight of our goal, and we no longer want to dream, we are in big trouble! Have you noticed that you have been happiest when you are in the middle of achieving a goal, and not at the end of it, you noticed that as soon as you are finished with your project you can't wait to start a new one. When we are working on our goals we can encounter a lot of difficulties and challenges but it is also during that time that we feel more alive.

Some people always procrastinate when it comes to doing what they might like to do with their life. They are not sure whether the goal they were thinking will be good for them, so they end up not doing anything!

Sometimes the most important thing is not the reaching of the goal...but the experiences we encounter along the way...I bet those experiences will teach us more and will make us a better person.

In pursuit of your goals, you may develop greater courage, determination and confidence, refine your power of persuasion, learn more about personal discipline, develop your stamina, meet your life partner and learn of people to avoid!

Successful people are not altogether intelligent, talented or unique. Some of them simply understand the way things work and realize that their own progress will be in accordance with the principles that governs everything else around them. They realize that we reach our goals by constantly correcting. It's a trial and error thing. Ships do it. Rockets and missiles do it and even the most intelligent, organized, goal-oriented, successful people do it. Don't lose sight of your goals because of mistakes - correct, learn and proceed.

Goals in life are our driving force

FEBRUARY 6 2010 FIRST BIRTHDAY RAP

Yo welcome everybody please do me a favor

My name is Bill Russell...not the basketball player

Today we celebrate our first birthday

A great reason to be outside and play

The Treatment Center was born in 2008

By folks who met at an unusual place

They cared about the addict very deeply

But they needed to work very discreetly

First they had to find the facility

To treat the patient with love and dignity

They looked at many places for the perfect fit

When they found Avalon they knew it was a hit

The next thing was to find the best staff

So they spread the word and caring people said yea

On February 5th The Treatment Center came into being

Our first patient was Mark who now handles the cleaning

Mark come up and take a bow

And meet our latest patient to show him how

So everybody have a beautiful time

Because in sobriety we can all feel alive

Let's all shout out Happy Birthday!

ALUMNI NEWS

Everyone has their own path to walk. Unfortunately, relapse is a part of many alcoholics' and addicts' paths. Many times, during every recovery, an alcoholic or addict will have a "slip" where they will use for a short amount of time and come back to the program with a newly found respect and determination to stay clean. Other times, they can stay in active addiction for years and if they are lucky, make their way back to sobriety. I personally know that I have another relapse in me. I just don't know if I have another recovery in me. For addicts and alcoholics, a relapse is a gamble with death.

In the unfortunate event of a relapse, the key is honesty. Not telling anyone about a relapse will only add to the burden and keep you in your active addiction longer. Although it is embarrassing, coming clean and telling a family member, a sponsor or a fellow addict or alcoholic will help get you back on track and keep you from falling back to your old ways. The feelings that come with a relapse can be just as dangerous as the drinking or the drugs. The feelings of shame and embarrassment can push us downhill quickly. After a relapse, honesty is the key to stopping the downward spiral and returning back to sobriety.
