  Quote of the Week

I sometimes think we expect too much of Christmas Day.  We try to crowd into it the long arrears of kindliness and humanity of the whole year.  As for me, I like to take my Christmas a little at a time, all through the year.  And thus I drift along into the holidays - let them overtake me unexpectedly - waking up some find morning and suddenly saying to myself:  "Why, this is Christmas Day!"  ~David Grayson

PAIN MANAGEMENT

WE TREAT THE DEPENDENCE AND THEN THE PAIN

Introducing our New Pain Management Track. We understand what you're going through and are here to help you. A dependency on prescription medication has become common in this country. It is estimated that today more than 4.7 million Americans are dependent on prescription medications. Whether it is a result of a physical injury caused by an accident, surgery, anxiety, or chronic pain caused by cancer or another disease, people from every walk of life are struggling with this problem. This is a problem that does not have any external signs. It is not something that is easily identified just by a looking at a person, and can affect anyone, anywhere; but we can help.

The Pentagon released a health survey last week that concluded about one in four soldiers admit abusing prescription drugs, most of those pain medications.

The survey surveyed more than 28,500 troops last year. It concluded that about 20 percent of Marines had abused prescription drugs during that period of time.

The results of the survey illuminate the emotional and physical toll that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have created. Many soldiers have served multiple deployments.

"We are aware that more prescription drugs are being used today for pain management and behavioral health issues," said Brigadier General Colleen McGuire, director of the Army Suicide Prevention Task Force. "These areas of substance abuse along with increased use of alcohol concern us."

The survey showed that pain medications were used three times more than marijuana and amphetamines, the other illegal drugs that rated high in the survey. About 15 percent of troops said they had abused prescription drugs in the month before completing the survey

New Year Resolutions

As the holiday season is upon us and the New Year is approaching, changing the elements of our lives that are damaging or unhealthy is a common goal. Change can be terrifying. However, change can also be liberating. Deciding to make positive and significant changes in life requires a tremendous amount of courage and faith. Recovery involves changing everything in one's world. It is not an easy endeavor, but the rewards of recovery are unparalleled.

 Seasons Greetings

Merry Christmas!

Nothing could more significantly herald hope to a weary, skeptical world and announce good news for all people than the birth of a baby. A child offers us, young and old alike, such wonder-filled hope of things new - of promise. "That glorious song of old resounds so beautifully of that birth two thousand years ago, Peace on the earth, good will to men from heaven's gracious King." The ineffable, unknowable, unapproachable Mysterious One reveals himself in the birth of a holy tender child who is Love's Pure Light.

This Child of Wonder graces us with a new spiritual way of living: a culture of selfless love and compassionate service. This Infant of grace graces us, sons and daughters of God, and makes us a new creation. The Child Mary delivered delivers us from the culture of death and selfishness. One has to wonder, did Mary know when she kissed her little baby that she kissed the face of God; did she know the sleeping Child she held in her arms is the Great I Am?

Isaiah the Prophet foretold, "The Lord will give you a sign: The virgin shall bear a son and shall give him the name Immanuel - God-with-us. God sends him to bring good news to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, and to proclaim freedom to captives. The glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all humankind shall see it together. So cry out at the top of your voices, heralds of good news: Fear not your God is here!"

So this TGIF Christmas weekend, let us be filled with the joy of new life and the peace of this Baby. Let us not conform to this age of selfishness, greed, and death but be transformed by the renewal of our minds, for in and through the Messiah's birth God's divine power has been freely bestowed on us; gifting us everything necessary for a new life, and making us sharers of his divine nature. We can then lay aside our old self and former way of life which deteriorate through illusion, acquire a fresh new spiritual way of thinking, and put on the new person created in God's image, for we are a new creation. Only a Child can empower us to focus on new and spiritual things and to no longer look on anyone in terms of mere human judgment. God, Mystery-Revealed, has healed us and given us the ministry of healing, making us his ambassadors. All because of the Child of wonder do we celebrate life and treasure the treasure!

I have to say that in the past I dreaded the holiday season. I hated everything about it. I never had money to buy gifts. I had to be around my family high. Nothing good ever came from Christmas. This year is different - for the first time in my entire life I am actually looking forward to Christmas. I am already done all my shopping and it feels really good to be giving for a change instead of taking, taking and taking. I really took the time this year to buy everyone in my life something special that they will actually use. It's nice to be wanted around the holidays instead of being a liability. I'm traveling up north to be with my family over the holiday weekend, so tune in next week for an update!

ALUMNI NEWS

The holiday season can be an extremely emotional time for us in recovery. Whether it is being alone for the holidays, seeing friends and family that we have not seen in a long time, or returning home for the first time since getting clean and sober, somehow this time of year seems to bring crazy emotions with it. Remember to keep the holidays in perspective. It should be a time of gratitude for what we are blessed with. If you are lucky enough to spend the holidays with loved ones, enjoy the time with them and try not to let friends and family add to much stress to an already stressful holiday season. For many years the holiday season was just another day of drinking and drugging...only with better food that I wouldn't eat. This year, be grateful for being able to enjoy good food, spending quality time with loved ones, and not feeling sick when we wake up in the morning.

For those of us in early recovery, this may be the first year in a long time that we will be celebrating the holidays without drinking or drugs. It is difficult to predict how we will react during the holidays. The best thing we can do is to have a back up plan for whatever may happen. If dinner with the family is bringing about rough emotions, know where and when the closest meeting is. On most holidays there are 24 hour NA or AA meetings. That is a safe place to spend part of the day to be around other people in recovery who may be going through similar feelings and emotions. This holiday season, do your best to keep things in perspective and stress free. Happy Holidays!
