Green River Yoga
Saturday, October 17
7:30pm - 9:00pm

Greetings!

Please join us this Saturday at Green River Yoga in Greenfield for an evening of chanting and meditation.

Lucy just returned (full of inspiration) from a 4-day retreat with artist Michele Cassou and it's contagious when someone close to you dips into the well of creativity and comes home full of new passion for life. Michele Cassou is a painter and although I'm not a painter, I find inspiration in her words:

"Even if we are not aware of it, each one of us longs to create, to manifest what is unique inside of us, to give it form. Freedom is necessary for pure creation take place. The pressures and demands of an expected result must go. We need to re-enter the present by the simple act of being spontaneous. Intuition guides us. Trusting the flow that comes naturally is the magic of creation. The hidden, the mysterious, the sacred from within are revealed. Old patterns break. The natural movement of creation becomes part of our life. Passion sets in."

As most of you know Mary Oliver gave a reading last month at Smith College. I find her poems beautiful and bold...a calling to wake up...a nice compliment to Michele Cassou and so I'm including two of her poems below: The Summer Day and The Journey. Enjoy!

Also, I'm happy to announce that Lindel Hart and I will be offering another afternoon of Yoga, chanting and meditation on the last Sunday in October at Hart Yoga in Shelburne Falls from 3-6pm. We had fun doing this last month and plan to make it a monthly offering so please join us on the last Sunday of every month!

Exploring the Inner Landscape through Yoga, Chanting and Meditation:
An Afternoon of Contemplative Practice
Sunday, October 25, 2009
3:00 - 6:00 PM

Join Lindel Hart and Rick Roberts for an afternoon of physical, spiritual and mental rejuvenation as we enter into the stillness that promotes self exploration through yoga postures, chanting and meditation. Come together in community with others for this mindful retreat from an overactive world to reconnect with your natural state of balance, harmony and peace.

The afternoon will include an asana practice guided by Lindel Hart and chanting with Rick Roberts and friends, as well as time for silent meditation together. There will be no specific instruction for meditation; we'll simply sit quietly together. Like the quiet space between the in-breath and the out-breath, the stillness that arises out of yoga and chanting leads one easily and naturally into meditation. No vocal/musical, yoga or meditation experience is necessary to experience the joy of this afternoon of contemplative practice. All are welcome, regardless of the type of yoga, meditation or spiritual practice you may have.

This event is FREE. However, donations are appreciated.

Let it be love,

Rick

The Journey
by Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice--
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do--
determined to save
the only life you could save.

The Summer Day
by Mary Oliver

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean--
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down--
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

Kirtan
with Rick Roberts and friends
Every 1st and 3rd Saturday

...is a time for people to come together, open their hearts and sing. For years chanting has helped people to effortlessly reach a state of quiet and stillness that easliy leads to meditation. While it's true that we can chant in our car or in the solitude of our home, there's nothing like chanting with others and with live musicians. Every kirtan is different depending on the energy of the group, but as the evening progresses one becomes saturated with the Name, the mind becomes one-pointed and dropping into a deep state of meditation becomes effortless.

Suggested donation is $10 but please remember that a donation is not necessary. Anything is appreciated, and all are welcome regardless of their ability to pay.
